STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Cagers Face Doubleheader Weekend The McHenry high Warriors open second round play in the North Suburban when they host the Crystal Lake Tigers tonight at West campus. These two teams met on Dk:. 2 and the Tigers won that g^»€ 45 t0 40 The Tigers are an up and down team this season. They were one of the early favorites for the North Suburban, but they just cah't be consistent. The Warriors are still shaking off the effects of the loss to Libertyville last Friday night. However, you can bet that they will be ready to go tonight when the Tigers arrive in town. Tomorrow night the Warriors travel to Crown to play the Vikings. The first game bet ween these two clubs was postponed due to weather con ditions back in December. After going 0 and 16 last year in^thV North Buburban, the Viltujg&are making waves this season. With an all veteran club returning, Coach Jim Hinkle has his team playing good ball. Once again Jerry Howell the 5'11" senior guard is the key to the Viking attack, but he has plenty of help with the likes of George Heuvelman who scored 39 pts against Mundelein last week. Others in the starting lineup are: Jeff Swczepanski a 6'4" senior, Jeff Holmes another 6'4" senior and Brian Evans a 6'1" senior. It looks as if the Warriors are going to have their hands full this weekend. Let's get out and support them. Warrior Matmen Downed By Crown Si The Crown wrestlers chalked up another of their many wins this season Tuesday night on their home mat against the McHenry Warriors. Coach Marty Sobczak's varsity men held the Vikings to two pins but gave away three forfeits to boost the Crown score to 48 to 6. Jeff Hurckes and Tom Hughes, both seniors, were the only varsity winners for McHenry. Hurckes' season record stands now at 7 and 9 while Hughes has a 4-3 varsity record and an impressive 12-3 season record: The Warrior junior varsity fell to the Crown wrestlers, 12 to 42. Mark Zizsik and Ed Hughes each won by decisions and heavyweight Ken Lauer claimed his first match pin in 5:21 Although the freshmen lost as a team 21 to 38, they won or tied all five of the matches actually wrestled for score. With a few more men on their squad, these fellows could really make a powerful team. Varsity Results 98 lbs., Reimann (Cr) pinned Ferbrache (McH) :43 105 lbs., Evans (Cr) dec. TBHUAtlWE 4019 LAKESHORE DRIVE WONDER LAKE -- 815-653-3000 EARL WALSH So I Hear „ SPORTS.EDITQR 'Cubs In '7ft The second annual baseball banquet at Johnsburg Monday night was a bang-up success. With Sib Whiting and George Harker, we arrived early and found many familiar, friendly faces ready for the festivities. They even had pretty girls on hand to pin carnations on us. I asked for a green one, but found they don i raise those kind in Johnsburg. One committee member told me where to sit. Was that a Jpiistake! I not only found myself at a "Cub Fans Only" table, but took the wrong chair. Sorry about that. v The way those Cub fans ate they were just as hungry for food as they are for a pennant. When Randy Hundley, Cub catcher-coach, visited the McHenry Rotary Club a while back, he and I got into a friendly discussion on Cubs- Sox. He didn't forget. -- r I took a white Sole sticker to Randy before the meal started and he was a good sport enough to stick it prominently on his coat lapel. Then came his turn. And did he make the most of it! When he stood up to speak, he put a Cub hard hat on my bald noggin'. Now, wasn't that a revoltin' development. Clearing Off The Sports Desk Piranha's Swim Team On Jan. 21 the Piranha's swim team of Lake Region YMCA swam in two meets. The results were as follows: Lake Region 329; Waukegan 347; Lake Region 127; Indian Boundary- 268. Swimming against Waukegan Glenna and Gail Gosch were among those receiving first place ribbons. Brian Baschnagel, wide receiver for the Chicago Bears, will serve as 1978 chairman of the MS READ-a-thon sponsored by the Chicago chapter, National Multiple Sclerosis society, according to an an nouncement by John F. Milliken, chapter board member in charge of the READ-a^on committee. "With his previous ex perience as a volunteer for the MS READ-a-thon in Columbus, Ohio, we expect Brian to be a real asset to the Chicago program," Milliken said. The annual winter tour naments are in full swing at the Racket club in Crystal Lake. This year, there are 360 entries with 248 matches to be played by completion. Participants are separated into Men's and Ladies A-B & C Singles and Doubles levels. Also, mixed doubles with A-B & C levels. Use Skillet If your oven is tied up with roasts and cassseroles -- and you need to heat the rolls -- use your electric skillet. Just sprinkle the rolls lightly with water, cover and heat at 225 degrees. You can also heat French bread this way -- just wrap it in foil first. My worst tormentors Dick Rabbitt, Herb Reihan- sperger, John Busscher and A1 Jourdan. Taking the hat off didn't suit Randy. "Wear it or hold it close to your heart", says he. When I put it on the seat of the chair to set on it, there was so much commotion that hardly anybody heard what Randy had to say about that. Enough about the hat, except to say that some pictures were taken and one of them reached Vernon Kays in the Courthouse early Tuesday morning. Vern picked up the phone to call me about it. He'i a Sox fan* too, as everybody knows. (The A1 Jour dan delivery service is faster than UPS). Somebody from the Sox put '78 schedules on the tables. Nary a Cub schedule. Trust they, plan Mi playing. Ben Hiller, now 83 years old, attended the big shin-dig and told me he was one of the original Inembers/ of the Community Club 55 years ago. "Tubby" Simonini, former player and ever a sports en thusiast, tiad a good time with old friends. As usual, Marie Oeffling and her crew fed us a delicious, home-cooked meal. They are experts. The program brought out a carload of laughs as each speaker spun yarns. 7* - Toastmaster Harry May turned the mike over to M.C. Vince Lloyd, Radio's Voice of the Cubs, who handled the program in great style. Randy Hundley antKhis Carolina drawl went over big with the crowd. Ken Kravec, a great south paw prospect with the Sox, is just starting the banquet circuit at the ripe old age of 23 years. He'll be around a long time. Dutch Rennert, National League umpire, is a little guy - but, oh my! He can spin yarns so fast that you have to listen cloeely. He slips in some quickies. Steve Vrablik and another baseball scout (name slips my mind) rounded out the program. If bouquets are to be tossed out, let's send them in the direction of Jerry Wakitsch. He's the one with connections to get the speakers. What's more, Jerry leads the way as the committee plans the big event. He's a great one to have on your team. Everybody in the crowd voted to hold another "Hit and Run CHdtimers' Dinner" next year. This one was great fun. Johnsburg PT0 Plans Volleyball Marathon The Johnsburg PTO is preparing for its third V o l l e y b a l l m a r a t h o n , scheduled for Feb. 11, 1978 at the junior high from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The basic cost of the tennis courts is lacking a few dollars for completion. Hopefully, this year's proceeds from the marathon will pay for nets and fencing. Contracts will soon be signed for construction to be completed this summer. Teachers from all schools will be playing, along with many parentsr Visitors are welcome to come and watch the games at no charge. Backers are always welcome and anyone can back the players of their choice for whatever monetary figure they wish. Refreshments will be served at a small fee. If you are interested in playing in the marathon you can pick up your pledge sheets at J.C. Bush school the week of Jan. 30; but you must be 18 or over. Chairman Jerry Wakitsch did another outstanding job, and Harry May fully recovered from the alumni game to act as the M.C. Both Cubs and Sox's send representatives, with Vince Lloyd the main attraction. Randy Hundley, former Cub catcher was also mi hand, and presented a gift to S.I.H. Ken Kravec, White Sox pitcher liked the idea of Bobby Bonds playing for the Sox's next season. A Sox scout Steve Vrablik, and veteran National league umpire Dutch Rennert amused the people with some good old fashioned story telling. / - As usual Tom Bolger had a table for his gang from the state bank. The smiling face of Green street Chris Wirtz of McGee's was seen in a corner. Ed Hall, County Supt. of Schools came from Woodstock. Herb Reihansperger had not heard of the academic problems at Wisconsin, so was in a festive mood. Had a nice chat with a former Warrior Dr. Tim Freund who came back from Chillicothe, 111. Mike DeWolf and Dick Doherty were as usual taking in the money. A1 Jourdan and Judge Herrmann were seen shaking hands, must be time for an electioa The Frett brothers, Willie Klapperich, Lloyd Freund, and Dick Hiller reliving the glory days of Johnsburg baseball. They even got Orville Freund out of Cooney Heights. The gift that S.I.H. received was a Cub cap from Randy Hundley. He was forced to wear it, or place it near his heart. He surprised all, by wearing it It was a grand evening, and all the .members of the committee, the women who cooked that delightful meal, we who were there, enjoyed a wonderful evening. The McHenry high Booster club likewise put on a fine evening last Saturday night at West campus. A large crowd on hand, had a lot of fun, watching the Intramural All Stars defeat the faculty, and that thrilling alumni game. I'm sure that Sunday morning there were some aching bones and muscles. A little over eight hundred dollars was raised for the Athletic department. They appreciated the attendance which made their first project such a success. Another former Warrior is making himself known in college circles. Marty Phillips scored 18 pts last week, playing for the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. The young lad is a freshman, and has a bright future at Whitewater. In going down memory lane this week we are taking you back to the County tournament at Crystal in February 1929. The Warriors defeated Richmond 22 to 8, and Richmond only had two players that scored all their points. A little different from the game today.
