QUASARS In 1960 two star-like ob jects were identified as emitters of radio energy. These objects are called quasi-stellar-radio sources because they superfi cially resemble stars as well as emit long-wave radio energy. The name has been shortened to quasar. The nature of these objects remained unknown for several years; they appeared as if they were made of no known chemi cal elements. In 1963, M. Schmidt of the Hale Observa tories suggested that these ob jects are moving rapidly away from our galaxy, and that they are therefore at great distances from us. (Remember, if we can measure the speed an object is moving away from us we can calculate its distance.) One quasar, 00 172, is moving away from us at 91 percent of the speed of light. This enormous speed indicates that the quasar may be more than 17 hillioif light years dis tant from the Milky Way Clal- a\y. If wo assume that I lie universe is up to 20 billion years old, the amount of time that has passed since the Big Bang, then the light from OQ 172 has been traveling toward us for most of the history of the universe. We are seeing this object as it appeared shortly after the creation of the uni verse (or at least after the Big Bang) because when we look out into space we are inevit ably looking back in time. ' Put another way, we may be looking at an object very close to the limits of our observable universe. Obviously, if an ob ject is traveling at the speed of light away from us, the light will never reach us and we won't be able to detect its existence. Quasars are still the most puzzling objects ever dis covered. If they are at the tremendous distances most as tronomers think they are. they are very bright and thus are putting > out prodigious amounts of energy. Because they aie so far away from the liarlh, however, a fair-si/ed telescope is required to see even the brightest quasars. Some of them are radiating in both optical and radio wave lengths. and others emit radia tion only in the optical region. No one has yet been able to explain adequately by any commonly known laws of physics how these objects can produce such large amounts of energy. Most quasars put out much more energy than an entire normal galaxy. Further more, quasars seem to be smaller than most galaxies but larger than individual stars. There are no known configura tions of matter close by our galaxy that we can studv for comparison, that are inter mediate in size between gal axies and stars. Because quasars arc so faf away and we are seeing them as they existed billions of years ago, they may represent organizations of mat ter that no longer exist in the universe - at least not within a billion or two light years of our galaxy. Not all astronomers are con vinced that quasars are a long distance away. Some investiga tors suggest that they may be quite small and nearby; we thus do not need to invent new physical laws to account for their brightness. On the other hand, we cannot then explain the data which indicates that these objects are moving rapid ly away from us because we know of no mechanism that could accelerate nearby objects to the tremendous speeds that quasars seem to have. Hence, quasars continue to present us with conflicting ob servational evidence that, de spite intensive research efforts during the past 15 years, as tronomers have not yet been able to explain in a satisfactory way.
