What Just One Person Can Do Rose Livingston, Social Worker If Rose Livingston were alive today, she might find the profession of social work rather tame. Called "The Angel of Chinatown," Rose Livingston worked in the 20's and 30's, barging into New York's dives and speakeasies to get young girls away from white slavers and pimps. Sleeping days and working nights. Miss Livingston knew her way around the back alleys of Chinatown, the Village and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.-Pulling youngsters scarcely in their teens from the bars and taverns, she would never turn them over to the children's society or the police, but would take them home and work with their parents. Convicted white slavers attacked her repeatedly. She was beaten more than twenty times. She was stabbed and shot at, and once a gang threw her down the stairs, breaking both her legs. Another time, attackers fractured her jaw. "But she always bounced back," remembers an ad­ miring settlement house worker. "They say she rescued over 800 girls in the 30 years she was at it. She took her life in her hands everytime she went into one of those joints." Rose Livingston lived to be 99 years old, staying always in the same tiny apartment near New York's East River. When she died in 1976, friends had both the traditional Jewish service and a Catholic Mass for her, explaining that "Rose would understand that." Fighting against social evils has never been safe or easy. Real accomplishment often means sacrifice of personal safety. It csin even mean the loss of life. But people like Rose Livingston, who saved 800 teenage girls, would say it's worth it.
