DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY Art Exhibition-Auction To Benefit AF5 Chapter The public is invited Saturday, Feb. 11, to the second annual AFS Art exhibition and auction sponsored by the McHenry chapter of the American Field Service. The auction will again be held in the downstairs room of Chapel Hill country club, with all the amenities to assure a good time for all. Preview will begin at 7 p.m., and the auction starting at 8:30. According to Cy Broman, AFS project chairman, the collection consists entirely of original works of art offered by the Robert Sills Gallery of Niles. It includes works by such renowned artists as Rockwell. Dali. Curry, Chagall and others All are framed, and accompanied by certificates of authenticity. While the artists mentioned above are world renowned, the selection in cludes a wide variety of oil paintings,, watercolors, lithographs and etchings by scores of famous or . aspiring artists with bidding starting as low as $20. Proceeds will help AFS, a non-profit organization, further its efforts to bring foreign students to McHenry for a year of study and family life ex perience, as well as sending McHenry youths abroad During the preview, those attending will receive free catalogs which explain the details of each painting. Also, experts from the Robert Sills gallery will be on hand to an swer any questions A cash bar \^ilj be open during the preview and auction, and dinner will be available oefore and after the proceedings at Chapel Hill. A small admission is charged All funds raised will benefit McHenry in terms of new found international understanding. Cancer-Facts And Figures Of the two most widespread major cancers, one is largely preventable and the other highly curable, declares the American Cancer society 's 1978 edition of Facts and Figures. "It says 80 percent of lung cancer could be prevented by the elimination of cigarette smoking, and nearly two-thirds of colon-rectum cancer patients saved through early diagnosis and prompt treatment," notes Eustice Klein, McHenry, president of the McHenry county unit. "About 102,000 new cases of each of these cancers are exacted in the coming year. Altogether, in 1978 about 700,000 people will be diagnosed as having cancer " The 1978 Facts and Figures, recognized as a standard reference work in its field, presents a comprehensive picture of cancer in the United States today. The new edition clearly demonstrates why there is such overwhelming concern about cancer today: It claims more lives than any other illness except heart disease, and kills more children between the ages of 3 and 14 than any other disease (although childhood cancer is not common). "Nearly 55 million Americans now living will eventually have cancer," Klein said "This year (1978), about 390,000 will die of the disease - 1,070 people a day, or one every 80 seconds Of every six deaths from all causes in the United States today, one is from cancer " Yet there is a hopeful side to cancer Progress is being made, and there is a potential to save more lives with the technology already available Although cancer strikes two out of three families in this country, one patient in three survives the crucial first five years after treatment. Most of these people can be considered cured ; Facts and Figures says three million Americans are alive today after having cancer, and two million of them have survived five years or longer. But it adds that about 117,000 people with cancer probably will die in 1978 who might have been saved by earlier treat ment This means half of those who get cancer could and should be saved. A point-by-point rundown on lung cancer and smoking lists a decline in adult smokers over ( the past year, a rise in teen smokers, heavier smoking by women, hazards of smoking by pregnant women on their un born children and the relative benefits of low-tar, low-nicotine cigarettes and greater benefits of quitting altogether. Lung cancer is by far the number one cancer killer, with - • .!•••• •w The McHenry Plaindeaier Established 107S 3ei2 West Elm Street Phone 305-0170 McHenry, Illinois 60050 Published Every Wednesday ft Friday at McHenry, Illinois Second Class Postage Paid at McHenry, Illinois By McHENRY PUBLISHING COMPANY fc*Kribort or* roqooitod to prorido Immediate notice of change of oddreti to The McHonry Molndeoler, Ml] W. If it were not for this single site, the age-adjusted cancer death rates in general would be dropping. "After cancers of the lung and colon-rectum, breast cancer remains the top cancer killer in American women with 91,000 new cases and 34,000 deaths estimated in 1978. However, the handbook states that when breast cancer is discovered in a localized stage, current therapy is highly ef fective, making possible a five- year survival rate of 85 per cent. Klein notes that two new sections in the handbook deal \&ith high risk groups and cancer checkups Cancer risk factors indicate what the chances are that certain in dividuals will develop a par ticular kind of cancer. Included are such factors as age, medical history, lifestyle, especially smoking, diet, complexion and occupation. Copies of "Facts and Figures" are available at all American Cancer society of fices through the state. Sounds Right The teacher was giving a lesson on the seasons. She asked, "Frankie, why does your father put up the storm windows in the fall and take them down in the spring?" "The main reason is that my mother keeps after him until he does." rr • • have e nice weekend. lift a finger ENIALS for ALL OCCASIONS lefl/ti & S feud ....tk tbu(jtinuii 1214 N. Green St., McH^rr
