FEBRUARY 10. 1978 Warriors Beat Mundelein 5 7-49 By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry Warriors broke a four game losing streak Tuesday night when they defeated the Mundelein Mustangs at Mundelein 57 to 49 The Warriors by far played their best game of the season in which Coach Ludwig remarked "It was a great win for us tonight". The defense was just plain super, as they held the high scoring Don Hutchinson to a mere 15 points, nine below his season average. Time and time again a Warrior came down with a key rebound, and in the all important free throw department made 7 of 11 The Mustangs went to the line only 3 times, converting just once The foul prone Warriors committed only seven for a season's low What was more remarkable, was the fact that in the second half, they com­ mitted only two turnovers, another record for this season's team.V-- The first period was evenly matched until the final seconds when the hosts grabbed a 12 to 10 lead at the buzzer. With Partenheimer, Deener, and Bentz all scoring in the second period, the local five managed to cut the margin to a one point deficit at the in­ termission, trailing 21 to 20. The first half was not a defensive game, as both teams commitled many turnovers, the Warriors had 14 for the half. Doug Oeffling s basket at 6:45 put the Warriors ahead 24 to 23, and from then on they never trailed in the game. Reinboldt's basket at the halfway mark put the Warriors up by five, their biggest lead of the night 30 to 25, but the Mustangs with the out shooting of Boothe narrowed the margin at the end of the period to a slim McHenry lead 36 to 35. in the final frame the Warriors had command of the game. With 5:30 remaining. Oeffling again hit a 15 footer and a foul was called away from the play, giving the Warriors the opportunity for a four point play. Although they did not take advantage at the moment, seconds later A1 Reinboldt canned aJayup that put the Warriors ahead by five 46 to 41. Scott Dixon's basket at the 2:30 mark gave the Warriors a seven point ad­ vantage 52 to 45, and from then on the Warriors held on for the victory. The rebounding of Jeff Par­ tenheimer, who time and time again came down with the ball surrounded by Mustangs. The stellar play of Doug Oeffling and Scott Dixon at the guards, bringing the ball up against the Mustang press. Don Bentz had a key basket and an important rebound during the struggling second period, and Tim Byers who gave relief to Dixon when he began to tire in the second stanza. It was a great win for the Warrior crew. Breaking a four game losing streak should put them into a good frame of mind for the closing games of the season. In the opening game the Warriors will play Belvidere, and on Wednesday March 1 Honengah of Rockton will play Woodstock. The winners will meet on Friday in the championship game, and the winner will advance to the Rockford Sectional at Rock Valley college. It should be a toss up tourney. All four teams do not have very impressive records to date. With the home floor and the good Warrior fans, the local five should be cast in the favorite role. The Warriors have their hands full tonight at North Chicago. The Warhawks are rolling along undefeated in conference play, and have it made look easy in the process. If the Warriors put their mind to it, an upset could be in the making. Congratulations to Mike Zimmerman, a member of Marty Sobczak's "Hassling Warriors". Mike won the 185 lb., title in the North Suburban last Saturday night at Libertyville. Tom Hughes at 138 picked up a third place finish. And both Junior Rivera and Bruce Brda had fourth place finishes for the Warriors. The Warriors travel to Antioch this weekend for the Districts. We along with all Warrior fans wish them well this weekend. Pam Schaffer's girls basketball team won a couple of games last week. The young ladies are improving with every game, and they have some good shooters on the team. The gal swimmers are doing a fine job. Angel Betancourt who received her training at Camp Duncan, and Cindy Weiss picked up a couple of first place ribbons last week. These gal swimmers put a lot of time and effort in the sport and should be congratulated for the fine job. Well, the football playoffs will be one week earlier come November. Due to the bad weather the past few seasons, which wasn't fair to the teams or individuals, the I.H.S.A. is moving the games back to the week before Thanksgiving. The question that is asked by the coaches at the present, will practice begin a week earlier? If so, the coaching staff, and players can count on a shorter summer vacation. In talking with some coaches they feel that they will have enough time for the first game, without moving the beginning of practice back a week. We agree with them. That football season is pretty long at the present, especially if you are in the playoffs, and if someone would only remember that it is only a game, not a job for the kids involved. Going down memory lane this week, we take you back to December of 1969. The Warriors defeated the North Chicago Warhawks 43 to 41. Mike Weingart's basket with just a few seconds remaining gave the Warriors the victory. Zion Benton won the title with a 12 and 2 record, and the Warriors finished second one game behind with an 11 and 3 mark.
