FEBRUARY 10. lt7M A Cos worth Vega driven by Ralph Grover of McHenry comes into the final turn on the snow-packed ice of Bangs Lake in Wauconda, site of last Sunday's Lake Region Sports Car club event. Grover drove the Vega to a first place finish in the '"Engine not over drive- I LAKE REGION SPORTS CAR CLUB The Lake Region Sports Car club (LRSCC) drew thirty-six entrants for their Super-Slide Ice event at Wauconda last Sunday. The event was held on Bangs lake and the double, figure- eight track became tough to negotiate as the ice became slick as the day wore on. Ralph Grover won both men's divisions of the racing, notching a first in the "Engine not over drive wheels" class and also in the "Front Wheel drive" class, where he was the only driver to break the one- minute barrier by finishing the course in 58.45 seconds behind the wheel of a Saab 99. Anita "AJ" Johnson cap tured first in the ladies division in a Datsun 240Z The event provided valuable experience for the LRSCC members who will now be competing in the second half of the Ice Challenge event series which has three events remaining. Lake Region currently has a mere six-point lead over the Royal Steeds Motor club. Next in the stan dings for the event are the Midwest Sports Car club, Volvo Drivers, Chicagoland Sports Car club and Madison Sports Car club. The final three events of the series, which LRSCC won last year, will be Feb. 12, 19 and 26 at Twin Lakes, Wis. The Lake Region club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the McHenry American Legion at 8:30 p.m. and anyone interested may attend. A race movie follows most meetings. > »• Besides ice racing, the club also competes in gymkhanas, rallyes, slaloms, trails and other driving events. Anyone desiring further information can contact Vice-President Wayne Gaylord at 385-0170 (days) or 385-8688. Hclen-Isn't it odd how many people are suffering from head colds this winter-- Dorothy-Yes, it is rather strange how those little germs can always seem to find our weakest spot. START 1978 WISELY!
