PAGE 10 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15. 1978 Awareness Month Alcoholic Women Increase "I drank because I was lonely and because of sheerf unadulterated boredom I was a housewife," says one former female drinker "Try being 27 years old with no husband, three kids, and a full-time job waiting on tables that doesn't even begin to pay the bills. Try that one, and maybe you'd drink too," says another recovering alcoholic. Three years ago one-fourth of all alcoholics were women Today that figure is up to one- half; fifty percent of all alcoholics are women Why do women drink? And why has the number of women alcoholics increased so dramatically" Researchers say that disrupted and instable marriages are often con tributing factors for women. Studies also attribute the onset of a woman's heavy drinking to specific life crises such as a parent's death, divorce, or post partum depression ^ Tt is easier For women 10 drink." explains Karl Koch, alcoholism counselor and outreach worker for the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County. "Especially when they don't work outside the home," he says, "it is easier for women to conceal how much and how often they drink when they are alone at home during the day ." When women drink ex cessively "it may be years before anyone outside their immediate family realizes they, are alcoholics," says Marty Mann, female founder of the National Council on " Alcoholism. But the increased statistics for women are not necessarily due to an increased number of women drinkers, according to Koch. <• "More women are now aware that alcoholism is not just 'a man's disease,' " says Koch. "They are more willing to admit that they need help." More women are also working outside the home, and many companies have programs which recognize and assist in drinking problems. Illinois Bell Telephone has had a company alcoholism education program for twenty- seven years. Nearly one-third of the approximately 500 Illirfois Bell employees being treated for alcoholism are women. The company also helps alcoholic spouse em ployees. One way to combat the alcohol problem is to learn more about it. "Care Enough To Learn" is the slogan of the February Alcoholism Awareness month currently sponsored by the Family Service and Com munity Mental Health center. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health center staff. This article is "Coping-The Adopted Child") From the time that an- adopted child realizes what the word "adopted" really means, the child begins to build up a fantasy image of what the "real parents" were like. This is certainly a healthy reaction and should in no way be discouraged by the adoptive parents. This is sometimes no easy matter, as the adoptive parents feel like the child's "real parents", and may have strong feelings, perhaps even feelings of rejection or jealousy, when the child wants to know more and more about the natural parents. Some adopted children develop the feeling that the "real parents" would be more fair, or have more money, or have a bigger house. These feelings will be more prevalent, of course, when the child is being disciplined and the child will quickly learn to use this to his advantage if the parents permit these fantasies to bother them. It is best to resist the temp tation to tell the child how very lucky he is to be with his present parents and not with his natural parents. By far the best approach is to answer the child's questions about his natural parents as completely and as honestly as possible in language that the child can understand. Surprisingly few adopted children are determined to find their real parents. In some cases this is possible if the adopting agency has kept adequate records. Certainly it should not be permitted by the adoptive parents until the child has reached late adolescence and then only by making sure that the child is prepared for a possible difference between fantasy and reality. Also, the child must realize that the natural mother gave birth eighteen or nineteen years ago and may have a marriage and family of her own. As the child was probably illegitimate, the natural parent or parents may not be prepared to face this child after all those years. While District 12 students were not attending school Friday, Jan. 13, 1978, the district's TALAR (Take A Look At Reading) committee shared their wealth of information on the basic and ever important skill of reading. The TALAR committee is a group of highly qualified, ex perienced educators from District 12 whose task it is to study reading instruction. Their conscientious effort to assist each teacher includes attending reading seminars, assessing students growth through tests and measurements, and evaluating this district's various ap proaches to reading. The morning was devoted to presentations by these com mittee members. Using a chart constructed by Ann Latz, Renee Fetzer provided an overview of the various reading programs and later discussed the correlation of student reading ability with the classroom textbook level. Techniques to determine the grade level of textbooks was demonstrated by Deborah Butler and Sandra Freund. Madge Diedrich discussed several informal reading in ventories to assess individual student reading level and teachers were involved in the language experience approach to reading through creative writing with Dorothy Arvidson. Bemadine Schert and Marie Falcone presented techniques for providing appropriate material to children reading below grade level within the classroom. Speech and language pathologists Kathryn Neier and Mary Wilsens answered questions dealing with the relationship between reading and speech and language skills. The afternoon was devoted to student and program assessment and the sharing of instructional materials by all teachers. The district recognizes the effort made by the TALAR committee for its diligent study of reading and their presentations.
