HAPPYSOrti mi GRANDPA MEL Law, Dive, De«n, Lynn ami Jennifer Those Key Shots Whether you're a struggling beginner or a top pro bowler, there are key shots in every game, every league match, every tournament. And the pressure is great. The best bowlers feel the pressure in a crucial situa tion the same as you do, but they train themselves to react. Think to the good shots you have made in the past and just tell yourself to make one more. Through my own experience and a close study of others, I discovered that 'in almost every case, key shots went high on the headpin. There is a natural tendency to be sure to hit the headpin and this caused many a bowler to pull the ball at the last split second, just to be sure. I'd rather be light. If you have confidence in your game and your ball, as I feel I do in myself and my hard driving LT-48, you give yourself a larger pocket area. When my clutch shot is good I have just as much a chance to carry the light hit as I would a full hit. And should I pull the ball, as I do at times, the pull brings the ball solidly into the pocket. Gain confidence in your clutch shot and your ball and try it. Johnny Petraglia is not only one of the country's top pro fessional bowlers but one of the game's expert instruc tors. The winner of the presti gious 1977 U.S. Open as well as nine other PBA titles, he's a member of the Brunswick Staff of Champions. Russian Drivers Face Problems The Russians have a unique punishment for drivers who are repeatedly stopped for reckless' driving: the motor ists are forced to sell their cars. With only 130,000 pri vate cars in the Moscow area and a minimum wait of three years to get a new model, that is a stiff and effective way of combatting the worst traffic offenders. Cars are much rarer outside of the major urban centers. But accident statistics in the Soviet Union indicate that even tougher methods may be necessary: the 1977 accident Roe fn £Hi capital was running, at last report, at the rate of 6,000 a year. More than 600 persons were killed there in auto accidents last year. One reason, Western experts surmise, is the very rarity of cars, which leads pedestrians to pay little heed to traffic signals. If cars are rare in Russia, spare parts and mechanic shops are even rarer: only 15 authorized repair shops exist in Moscow. The demand for replacement parts has become so intense that car owners parking their vehicles on Moscow streets take off the windshield wipers to keep them from being stolen. ••• Check The Dates Check the dates on perishable foods before purchasing Be sure all of the food can be used before it spoils.
