Offer "Respite Care" Program SERVICE NEWS PAGE 15 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15. 1978 t r a d i t i o n a l l y "Respite Care" is a special service provided by the McHenry County Association for the Retarded which aids the developmentally disabled and their families, says Beth Greene, Respite Care coor dinator. The developmentally disabled include the cerebral palsied, the epileptic, the autistic, and the mentally retarded. Respite Care is designed to provide short-term residential care to a developmentally disabled child or adult during a crisis, emergency, or during a family's absence from the home. The Respite Care program will serve all children and adults in McHenry and Lake county who are developmentally disabled. This includes children enrolled in Special Education classes in McHenry and Lake county, people in private programs, as well as individuals in the community not enrolled in any program. Many families in the two counties are unable to get away due to an emergency or for a vacation because someone close to them is develop- mentally disabled and requires special care. Respite Care is available to help meet the needs of these individuals. Due to the nature of funding. however, vacation placements are temporarily limited. McHenry County Association for the Retarded has con tracted with several different residential facilities to provide sheltered and skilled care, as needetf.* Respite .Care also includes a foster parent program and a homemaker- sitter program. The foster parent program involves families opening their homes to care for developmentally disabled children or adults. The homemaker-sitter program involves an individual who would go into the home and stays there to care for the child or adult during the family's absence. People performing these services will be paid by the day for providing them. Those desiring to Use Respite Care, or needing further in formation. should contact Beth Greene. Respite Care coor dinator. at (815) 344-1230. Although emergency service can be provided, advance notice is preferred to insure the most appropriate placement. Those interested in working as foster parents or homemaker- sitters are also encouraged to apply I Winter Hazards By Alan J. Dixon Secretary of State Recent blizzard conditions in Illinois were a stark reminder of the hazards of winter driving. Here are a few safe driving habits to help you offset the dangers of driving in this weather. Reduce your speed according to conditions. There is no such thing as a "completely safe" driving speed on snow or ice. You must be very careful until you can be sure how much traction you can expect from your tires. Every city block and every mile of highway may be different, depending on sun or shade and the surface of the roadway. Use snow tires and-or chains on your rear wheels. Snow treads will greatly improve general traction, including starting and stopping. Tire chains provide further ef fectiveness when ice and snow cover the road. Neither snow tires nor chains, however, will allow you to drive on slick roadways at normal speeds. Get the feel of the roadway. Start out very slowly. Test your brakes gently after the car is in motion, to find out how much traction you will have. Start slowing down before you come to an intersection, a turn, or a stop. No one expects to be stranded in blizzard conditions, but an unexpected blizzard can become a reality. A good winter driving plan includes carrying a shovel, a heavy woolen blanket, and a few candy bars, just in case your snow tires or chains can't take you through. If you are stranded, your chances for survival are better if you stay inside your car and wait for someone to find you, or until the storm is over. Your car's engine should be run for just short time periods to give you enough heat for survival. Open a window just a little, even if it is ver^ cold...carbon monoxide is dangerous in an idling car. (A copy of the rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756.)
