SECTION 2 - PARE S - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 15. 1178 Lakeland Park & Lakeland Shores Sharon Gacek Anne Moore 385-3777 385-6448 City Beach Is Conservation Club Concern The McCullom Lake Con servation club Will hold a meeting for everyone in terested in discussing the acquisiiton of a beach on Mc Cullom lake by the city of McHenry. All are invited and encouraged to attend. The Conservation club and the Lakeland Park board need your comments and support for protecting the integrity of the lake. This meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 16 starting at 8 p.m., at the Lakeland Park community house, 1717 Sunset avenue. WOMEN'S CLUB NEWS Members of the Lakeland Park Women's club met last week and enjoyed the lovely decorations and treats provided by hostesses Petey Oakford and Shirley Koch. Many important issues were discussed and final plans were made for the annual spring Luncheon and Card party. This gala event will be held Wed nesday, April 26 at St. Patrick's church hall. Petey Oakford is ticket chairlady and the membership will soon have the tickets in their possession to sell. Club members will be visiting Valley Hi nursing home Wednesday, Feb. 22. The women will be bringing treats to the residents and will spend some time chatting with them. We will meet at the community house and will leave from there as a group. Craft-club will meet that morning and the members will bring their lunch to the community house and will eat before leaving for the nursing home. The Easter party for the area children has been scheduled for Saturday, March 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the community house. An Easter egg hunt is planned depending on the weather but in any case the children will have a good time! There will be an Easter parade and bonnet contest again this year. Treats will be provided and a fun af ternoon is promised. Reservations are necessary and a parent must accompany their child and stay at the party. Call one of your columnists to make your reservation. The members of the Women's club also planned an outing for June. They will visit Amity Leather and West Bend in Wisconsin, will have lunch in Port Washington and visit Cedarburg before they return to McHenry. The date is not final yet but more information will be given at the March meeting. As anyone can see, ours is a very active club. Why not plan to come to the next meeting of the group which will be Thursday evening, March 9. Hostesses for the March meeting are Maureen Johnson and Sharon Gacek. We'll see you there! DERBY NEWS Another successful Mc Cullom Lake Conservation club Ice Fishing derby is over and plans are already being discussed on next year's fifth annual derby. One big issue being discussed is the lack of fish in February. This is the second year that fish were hard to find. Members are talking about moving the date back into January. There were plenty of fish being caught last week, what happened? One thought is that due to the large amount of snow covering die ice, the penetration of sunlight and oxygen is prohibited which causes the problem known as "winter kill". Another problem that adds to "winter kill" is the shallowness and the silting in of many springs on the lake. This is what the dredging program will prevent in the coming years. Many fishermen moved over to the west end of the lake where fish were more plentiful. That was the first section of our lake to be dredged last year and a good sign that the dredging is very helpful. If we want our lake and fish to survive we have to have the capital to run the dredge in the spring. We cannot wait for the future and hope that special funding will come our way. We have to support this' fine program now if we want a useable lake. If you are in terested in the dredging program please contact Mrs. Ed Hammer or your columnist, Sharon Gacek. Ann Sullivan of Lakeland Park was the first prize win ner; Jodi Jacques took second; an ice shack was awarded to Don Norton; a meat smoker went to Jim Kringstad; and other prizes went to Dennis Ansell who received a chain saw; a Chicago fire decanter to Phyllis Venerable, a corn popper went to John Pudzis, a gift certificate to Roger Harris and Coleman fuel to Bud Byron. The Holas family also of Lakeland Park won the prize for best homemade ice shack on Saturday. Their entry was a bright pink shack with red hearts. Frank, Bob, John and John, Jr., are all ready for Valentine's day. As in years past, the Mc Cullom Lake Beach Gals provided a delicious and hearty menu for derby participants. Cub Scout Den No. 2 from Lakeland Park participated with a bake sale and the boys were very interested watching Elmer Thorpe make handmade bows and arrows and Jerry Kara's beautiful display of mounted birds and animals. Many of the boys had never been to an ice fishing derby before and enjoyed the walk out on the ice to see how the people auger out a hole and set it up for fishing. President Jerry Raycraft and his committee chairpeople did a fine job providing something of intesest for everyone and a good time was had by all. ATTENTION BASEBALL FANS Word comes from Sam Bucaro that the Little League baseball club sponsored by the Lakeland Park Property owners association is in dire need of officers for the new season. It is an established league and the officers are stepping down after four years of hard work and a lot of fun and enjoyment. Anyone interested in keeping this league going should con tact Mr. Bucaro as soon as possible as registration should be just around the corner. There must be some interested parents with sons who would love to play baseball this coming season. Now's your time to get involved and keep this league going for all the young fellows to enjoy. Phone Mr. Bucaro for more in formation. FIRST COMMUNION Pretty Kristie Marie Heuer made her First Holy Com munion last Sunday at St. Patrick's Catholic church. (McCullom Lake) (About McCullom Lake) FISH DERBY For all the determined and dedicated ice fishermen who braved last Saturday's snow, and Sunday's cold, the annual fishing derby is over for another year. It seems Mother Nature and the fish were not very cooperative this year, since the catches were both small in numbers and size. There is no way to be sure why this is so. Some say it was because of barometric pressure Licastro will hear the birthday song Feb. 20, and Maria Bremer will celebrate her special day Feb. 21. Happy birthday to you all! change, others say too much snow cover; whatever, the fish were not biting. The inside festivities were well attended, delicious Italian beef, chili and barbecue were on the menu served by the Beach Gals of McCullom Lake. As always, gals, a job well done. Derby prize winners were as follows: first prize, Ann Sullivan; second prize, Jodi Jacques; third prize, Dan Norton; fourth prize, Jim Kringstad. There -were many prize donations, and time and in terest shown by manjr people involved in putting this annual derby together. The splendid friendly cooperation ot the auxiliary police, McHenry Rescue squad, the Sno-Birds Snowmobile club (McHenry Moose) helped make derby days safe, and enjoyable. & IMPORTANT MEETING The next monthly meeting of the McCullom Lake Con servation club Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. at the Lakeland Park Com munity house, 1717 North Sunset, will be a very im portant meeting.
