He hauled manure, fought drought, disease, bark beetled and the problems of bottom soil ; impregnated with high acidify * to reclaim 42 acres of striji-^ mined land that he bought 23 years ago for less than $500. ,a'^ When he was twenty-six, Mr:.' * Baumeister worked long houi% ' operating a bakery. His wife worked for the telephone company. Their driving am- bition was to own a place in tW?;' country - with a lake. J>-i Since there were no funds^ with which to achieve this goal,*'1 they used ingenuity. He bought"' an ugly tract of barren ravines'- and desolate hills, gouged ovlt by years of strip mining. But- * there were six acres of-* beautiful water with a con torted mile-and-a-half shoreline created by th? miners. By reading extensively and., working with the University qf.^ Missouri county Extension,*: service, the state Forestry and;« Conservation divisions, and the „ soil Conservation service, he.; began his-- reclamation,- program. From the William Woods college horsebarn, he hauled truckloads of manure. He dragged in crushed limestone. He planted over 75,000 trees. "No matter how bleak the project looked," he states, "I was never ready to quit working on my land. I had a long-term goal, and my dreamt, of the finished beauty kept me going. Today, many wild animals live on land where 23 years ago a crow couldn't hav£ survived. I feel I've built sr piece of nature," says Roger Baumeister with glee. Can you "build a piece et nature" - even a small one? *. • * * * The greatest asset ir^,- any town is its people not " its wealth. Let's cultivate our greatest asset.
