FAIR, FIRM COMPETENT, EXCELLENT, DECISIVE, By Dick Babbitt In a game in which the score does not indicate the final outcome, the McHenry Warriors were defeated at North Chicago last Friday night by the score of 77 to 63. The high flying Warhawks after a sputtering start, settled down and easily handled the Warriors, in fact literally blew them off the court. The Warriors jumped out to a 10 to 6 lead, but then the tur novers began to take their toll on the local five. With the hosts taking advantage of the bad passing on the part of the Warriors, they overtook them and went on to an 18 to 14 first period lead Once in the lead the Warhawks began to play outstanding ball Again and again they grabbed an of fensive rebound and put it back up for the basket, and in creased their margin to thir teen points to a 36 to 23 halftime lead * The third period was more of the same, with Andrews and Jenkins hitting the hoop for the Warhawks to increase the spread to a 59 to 35 margin at the end of the period. In the final frame, both coaches cleared their benches and the Warriors managed to outscore the hosts 28 to 18, but it was not enough for the Warriors. The Warriors lost to a super ball club. If Coach Tom Gregorian can keep them settled down, they will be a team to reckon with come tourney time. They have it all. Size, speed, shooting, and defense. The Warhawks tend to become careless at times, and this could be costly to them in March The Warriors were not that all bad. Although they have played better ball this season, the Warhawks forced them into numerous turnovers with their tenacious defense As Coach Ken Ludwig remarked after the game. "We have to be more patient, especially in our passing game". One consolation was that Jeff Partenheimer i Warrior forward led all scorers with 17 points. Along came Joe Moer- schbaecher < one of those Notre Dame Irishmen) and his very likeable wife What Joe had on his mind was that we should play up Notre Dame's basketball team as No. l in the country. The football Irish team was No. 1 so why not the basketball team. Joe had me primed for some choice remarks, then came DePaul on Sunday afternoon to lower the boom and beat Notre Dame in a squeaker, 69 to 68. You never can tell what DePaul's canny coach, Ray Meyer, will come up with from year to year. We saw Meyer play the game for Notre Dame many years ago Wow! He was a great one. if the employer pays 10 and the employee 10, it adds up to 20. With all the other deductions, we are going to run out of points. It's that.time again. McHenry and Johnsburg Courts are making ready for the thirty-second annual C.O.F. state basketball tournament. Again they are coming to McHenry. Games to be played at West campus. March 5-12-19 are the dates to remember. , The Forester tournaments give you more action for your money than you can find anywhere. Ed Blake has learned that his last name is prominent in Ireland. When I speculated that he might be Irish, he held his tongue. Never thought of it, but Al Blake toured Ireland last year. He may have been working on a family tree. Still thinking of bounce ball, it seems impossible that a team could score 138 points in a game and get beat by two points. It happened in the pro ranks last week. And speaking of points. How about percentage points? According to old style math. Now a group of American Indians plan a 3,000 mile walk to the White House to protest the treatment they have received. Seems like they have a kick coming, but their mode of transportation is going to take a lot of moccasins. I'd ride a horse. AN OPENING - and Warrior Don Bentz takes a shot at the net during the Warrior 77-63 loss to the strong North Chicago Warhawks Friday night. Bentz scored 14 points as he and Jeff Partenheimer (17 points) were the only Warriors to hit the double figure. (STAFF PHOTO) The North Chicago sophomores broke away from a 32-all third period score to outscore the McHenry sophomores 12 to 9 in the final seven minutes to win 44 to 41 at North Chicago last Friday night. Lenny Jensen led the local scoring with 16 points. Brett Zimbrick was injured in the pre game warmup and may be lost to the squad for the remainder of the season. S
