Hoban of Chicago as bishop of the Rock- ford diocese to succeed the late Bishop P.J. Muldoon. who died last October. Three reels of moving pic tures, showing the development of the telephone, telephoto and television, were flashed on a screen at the meeting of the McHenry Kiwanis club at the Thursday evening meeting of last week. These films were put on through the courtesy of the Illinois Bell Telephone com pany On Friday night the basketball team of the McHenry Athletic club met defeat at the hands of the strong Waukegan aggregation. The game was a close one, played on home grounds. Waukegan only won by one point, the score being 21 to 20. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 17, 1938) This entire community is saddened by the message received this morning telling of the sudden death of Dr. N.J. Nye, 66, which occurred at Miami, Fla., Feb. 16. Dean of the physicians of McHenry, Dr. Nye was respected and beloved by the people of a wide territory, where for forty years he worked untiringly in ad ministering medical aid and in bringing more than 3,000 babies into the world. Local sportsmen who at tended the opening meeting sponsored by the Marengo chapter of the Sportsmen's League Monday night, were pleased to hear a promise from J.C. McConaha, state organizer for the department of con servation of Pontiac, that some 900 pheasants will be released in McHenry county this year by the Conservation department. Besides the promise of some 900 pheasants the Conservation department has also promised the release of quail and chukkar partridges. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 19, 1953) Dogs and dog licenses are getting special attention this week in McHenry as a result of many complaints registered with the mayor and city council. The police department has been directed to canvass the entire city to check on licenses, warn owners to abide by the ordinance and make every effort to impound dogs found running at large. Preparations go forward for the annual Red Cross fund drive, which will be conducted in McHenry on Tuesday, March 2. The local quota this year is $3,300, which is $500 higher than in 1952; the county quota is $29,000. Robert Conway, fund drive chairman, asks that people give in the community in which they reside rather than where they may be employed since funds, in time of need, are taken from money collected in the home community. It may still be February, but spring js really with us. Last Monday McHenry firemen were called out to extinguish two grass fires, one near the North Western depot and the other on Rt. 31, south of the city, near the Downs building. McHenry welcomes two new businesses to its ranks this week, one a sporting and marine store, the other a retail factory outlet business. Both are housed in buildings which are attractive from the exterior and modern throughout. The new establishments are Mark's sporting and Marine store on Green street, owned by G.F. Markeson, and Riverside Manufacturing Col, a retail factory outlet store, owned by Sam and Madeline Nathanson and located on Riverside drive. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 23, 1968) At the regular meeting this week, the City Council passed a resolution appropriating $60,000 motor fuel tax funds for widening and improving Crystal Lake road from Illinois Route 120 to Hanley street. This has been set up for some time in the long range plan for street improvements and is not to be confused with street widening whichrextends to the new high school r* \ NEW BUSINESS IN TOWN HSrifetni L CLEANING SERVICE INC PROFESSIONAL HOUSECLEANING •Weekly or Bimonthly Lt. housecleoning •Window Washing •"Free Estimates" •Draperies & Carpet cleaning service •Guaranteed Satisfaction SMALL OFFICE CLEANING •Monthly Contracts •Competitive Pricing •Vacuuming & Inside windows •- V" •Guaranteed Satisfaction CALL 385-0283 HEY KIDS! WHAT S NEW Wildlife Management The Issue Illinois Joins Alaska To Protect State's Rights Undetectable on person of man or woman wearing coat or jacket, leather wallet buckles under one arm, is fastened with leather straps. Illinois Attorney General William J. Scott has announced that Illinois is joining Alaska, as a friend of the court, in a federal appellate battle to protect states' rights to manage wildlife within their borders. Involved is an Alaskan program designed to preserve the western Arctic caribou herd. Attorney General Scott pointed out that since 1970, the Alaskan caribou population has plummeted from 244,000 animals to 60,000. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game acted to protect the herd by a program, which among other things, prohibits all caribou hunting except for subsistence hunting by Eskimos. An Alaska District court ruled last year that the U.S. Secretary of the Interior had authority under the Bureau of Land Management Act to supercede state action and put a stop to the program. Scott has filed an amicus brief in the Federal Court of Appeals in San Francisco urging the court to reverse the Alaska District decision. "This is not a case where state action threatens migratory or endangered wildlife," Scott stressed. "This is a question of whether the federal government will be permitted to upset a well established legal principle that states have the right to manage wildlife in the best interests of their citizens " Attorney General Scott pointed out that Illinois is in terested in the Appellate Court's decision because of the potentially detrimental effect an adverse decision could have on existing Illinois Department of Conservation programs in the Shawnee National Forest and through the state to protect and perpetuate native wildlife species. Now. because of an Illinois Department of Conservation restocking program, these deer are found in 99 counties. Some are even encountered by visitors to the Forest Preserves surround Chicago." The Attorney General said that other successful restocking programs have established self-sufficient colonies of wild turkeys in downstate counties and have brought trout and salmon back to Lake Michigan in large numbers The brief, filed by the At torney General's En vironmental Control division argued that the federal statute involved in the Alaska case, the Bureau of Land Management Organic Act, expressly protects the right of Illinois and other states to manage resident wildlife even on federal property within the state. McHenry Farm Service Plans Annual Meeting Good news about anticipated supplies for 1978 will be given farmers when an expected 1,000 farm men and women gather for the 1978 annual meeting of McHenry FS on Thursday night, Feb. 16. The annual meeting will be held at the Playboy club in Lake Geneva, site of last year's gathering where more than 1,500 battled traffic and the huge turnout to take part in the annual meeting. Sitdown will be at 7:30 p.m. Business meeting starts at 8:15 p.m. Again this year, McHenry FS customers are being sent reservation letters along with details on the annual meeting. General Manager Stanley Steagall requests farmers wait the arrival of that letter before inquiring about reservation details. This year participants will be asked to pay a small fee per person to help defray expenses of the dinner and annual meeting. Steagall said the annual meeting is a time for farmers to learn how the company they own is doing and a chance to find out what's significant in upcoming farm products- fertilizers, herbicides, in secticides and seed supplies, for example. Steagall an ticipates a "normal" season as he and his staff prepare for 1978 planting, but a few price in creases compared with 1977 costs may be anticipated. One milestone was reached during the past fiscal year. Sales topped $13 million, although net income declined because of smaller margins on fuel and fertilizers and because of a decline in patronage earnings returned to member companies by the three-state parent company, FS Service, Inc. Directors whose terms expire include Richard Walters, Woodstock, and John Teuting. Elkorn. Wis McHenry FS serves farmers in McHenry county. Illinois and Walworth county. Wisconsin.
