PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 22, 1978 Grandma Scz • • • Corduroy--Versatile Fabric Ten whole years ha' passed, when Washin'ton's birthday comes around, this year, since this granny first greeted readers, in this little column. Many things ha' happened, in that decade, some good, an' some not so good. One day, a rockin' away, in me creaky ol' rockin' chiar, me mind cluttered wi' all th' trials o' th' world, an' burdened wi' th' way folks seemed t' be headed in th' direction o' disaster, me pen got busy in effort t' put a few warnin's in words, that might help a few o' •th' younger generation o' parents, an' others, t' think about what th' future may hold. It seems t' be th' nature o' human bein's, t' have much better hindsight, n foresight. Folks get so involved wi' all th' wonderful things pervided in this affluent society, that they can't realize it wasn't always this way. Extravagance has b'come th' order o' th' day, where forced frugality held sway, only a few short years ago Seems incredible t' this o ' lady, brought up in th' city, an' a knowin' a lot o' hard times, an' some good times which 'd be considered a great deal less good, these days, that things could come t' this pass, in such a short time. A lookin' back, o'er all th' years, since th' beginnin' o' this century, a body marvels at th' rapid pace, in which we've come t' th' disastrous condition we find ourselves t'day. Most o' th' fault lies in th' greed o' human nature, so far removed from natural practices, in stinctive t' most life on this ol' planet. This senior frets about th' younguns, a growin' up wi' th attitude they've been endowed wi , in a society where inflated economy sets th' stage f'r a lack o' regard an' appreciation f'r all they enjoy, in this age. It grieves me heart t' think o' havin't' deflate th' balloon, an' get back t' bare necessities, an' it won't be easy on folks t' have t' give up a good many luxuries. This party wonders how it'll all turn out, wi' havin' replaced our good, ol* fashioned tran sportation wi' that which uses up resources too fast, every thin' operated wi' electric power, e'en to a tooth-brush, an' now bein' faced wi' so many news sources in th' country a bein' replaced wi' th' elec trically operated medias. No one seems t' be concerned wi' what's ahead. We used t' save, money, food, clothin', our homes an' their furnishin's, but it went out o' style t' be frugal about anythin'. This granny wonders what's b'hind it all. Why were we encouraged t' spend, spend, spend. Why were folks led into livin' on credit, th' road t' disaster f'r many. Looks t' me like we fell into a great big trap, an' we won t get out, 'til things take on such a grim condition that'll force a change in th' whole o' society. Some o' us, who've lived through some pretty rough times, could see it a comin', not bein' able t' do much but try t' warn folks t' take a good look t' th' future. So, Granny gives her rock' chair a lot o' hard use, a rockin' away, an' bein' concerned wi' what's a happenin' t' th' generations ahead. Grandma Radtke DENTIST TO SPEAK The McHenry and Fox Lake La Leche League groups will sponsor Dr. Frederick Fitz- patrick, Crystal Lake children's dentist, as guest speaker Thursday, Feb. 23. The public is invited to attend the 7:30 program at Mt. Hope Methodist church, 1015 W. B r o a d w a y , P i s t a k e e Highlands. From leisure fare and high fashion to home furnishings and accessories, corduroy is a most versatile fabric. It is d u r a b l e , c o m f o r t a b l e , washable, soft and available in a variety of weights, wales, rich earthy shades and prints. Traditionally, corduroy has been an all cotton fabric. Blends of cotton and polyester have become popular in the interest of greater shrinkage control and wash and wear characteristics. Narrow to wide wales or ribs, on a plain or twill weave back describe the pile. Pinwale, the narrowest ribbing, is generally light weight and suited to infants' wear, lounging apparel, bed spreads, curtains and pillows. Mid and 7-wale are most popular for children's wear, sportswear and casual styles in suits and dresses. Wide-wale, a heavyweight corduroy with thick, plush pile is often chosen for coats, suits and sportswear. Novely weaves with sculptured or textured effects are popular in fashions and home fur nishings. Corduroy keeps its soft, plush feel washing after washing. Before laundering, group similar colors together, some bleeding of dark shades may occur after a number of washes. Wash colored pieces separately or with other dark items. To prevent any lint from clinging to the pile, turn items inside out. Check that washer and dryer lint screens are clean. W£sh and dry small loads for minimum wrinkling. Machine drying restores fluffiness to corduroy and helps to eliminate the need for ironing. Remove articles from the dryer while still slightly damp to maintain fluff and prevent wrinkling.
