Six new and one continuing Master Gardeners were graduated recently by the McHenry County Extension service Dave Plocher, county Extension adviser, has an­ nounced Norma Reddeman of Crystal Lake has been a volunteer Master Gardener for three years. She has been involved even longer in Garden and Flower shows. She is a national accredited flower show judge. Newly graduated Master Gardeners include Deanna Larson, Harvard; Kathy Martin, McHenry; Aranka Varga, Crystal Lake; Marilyn Prottsman, Richmond; Ed Domek, Woodstock; Randy Schultz, Woodstock. The Master Gardener program was initiated in Illinois three years ago, because of the increased requests of local residents for assistance with horticulture problems. Gardening, tree fruits, crops, small fruit crops, lawn care and maintenance, and land­ scaping are some of the areas that Master Gardeners are able to assist. According to Plocher, the Master Gardener volunteers will be in the county Extension office on specific days over the next months and are currently assisting state horticulture specialists in the 1978 hor­ ticulture series. Upcoming horticulture sessions include Pest Control for the Advanced Vegetable Gardener, March 6; Plantings and Maintaining Landscape Plantings, March 7; Perennial Gardening, March 13; Annuals, March 20; Lawns - Establishment, March 27; Lawns-Maintenance, Pest Control, March 28. Young Parkland Musicians Successful At Contest On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Parkland band and chorus students participated in the annual district solo and en­ semble contest held in Round Lake and returned with top honors Soloists from the band receiving a Division I rating were Stacy Fox (flute), Heidi Reihansperger (flute), Debbie Jensen (clarinet), Shannon Tiffany (trumpet), Rory Fiali (trumpet), Heide Bender (French horn), Kelly Sue Thomas (tuba). Soloists receiving a Division II rating were Bev Finkbeiner (flute), Cindy Johnson (flute), Chris Lorenz (clarinet), Julie Dowell (clarinet), Lisa Taylor (clarinet), Hallie Miller (clarinet). BIRTHDAY PARTY It was a very special occasion for Marge Evans last Sunday night when ten of her fri^pds joined her for a birthday party in her honor at a Wonder Lake restaurant. The management played "Happy Birthday" with everyone singing and the party was complete with a cake and candle. Marge also had the pleasure of opening some very lovely gifts. HERE N THERE Walt and Doris Low have spent a part of the last week visiting and snowmobiling in the Hazelhurst, Wis., area with Betty and Bob Graham. The latter part of the week found them visiting, snowmobiling and ice fishing at L'anse, Mich. SCOUT NEWS PACK 162 / On Feb. 19, the McHenry Scout t'ack 162 held their an­ nual Blue and Gold dinner for the Cub Scouts, Webelos and their families. The dinner was held at the American Legion hall in McHenry and featured roast beef served buffet style. The Scouts opened the ceremonieS"with the pledge of allegiance to the flag and C h a i r m a n A n d y P a c e i n ­ troduced Cub Scout Den 4. The boys led the congregation in a short prayer. Following the dinner, Mr. Pace introduced the Pack's Institutional representative, Lester Smith of McHenry and American Legion Post 491 Vice Commander Stanley Burlack. Mr. Burlack welcomed the scouts and their families and reaffirmed the legion's confidence in the scouting program. Karen Sarabia presented Mrs. Pat Doherty representing the Pioneer center with a check from proceeds of the bake sale that her den held during a recent fishing derby. The check is to be used by the Pioneer center. Mr. Pace then presented the c o m m i t t e e m e m b e r s responsible for this event, John Grandt, Shiela Grandt, Bonita Godt, Caroline Scott, David Miller and Geri Neubauer. He also presented service pins to den leaders, Art and Beverly Kreutzer; -Jose and Kathy Sanchez; Karen Sarabia; Ruth Beardsley; Geri Neubauer; and Bob and Jackie Palmer. John Grandt asked the two Webelos who had presented the colors to do so again, and he then presented Andy Pace with a special award for 10 years service to scouting in McHenry. The Child Welfare program provides financial assistance toward medical and hospital £bills for a veteran or auxiliary members child who is ill and needs treatment. Members are on the lookout for veterans and auxiliary members children who might qualify for aid under the Child Welfare program In four months medical and hospital bills in the amount of $7,334 were paid, thus lifting a h e a v y b u r d e n f r o m t h e shoulders of parents of seriously ill children.
