STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD ; --EARL WALSH ̂ So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR A thoughtful note comes from J»yle Turner, reminding me lat St. Patrick's Day is only a lonth away. Lyle enclosed one of the rettiest scenes of Ireland that HI can imagine. It is on a penny postcard from ^ay back when. Can't make out le date, but a one cent stamp ites it back a few years. Crowded writing on the card alls of all the illnesses in the snder's family. The health bulletin asks for a Jturn message to "let us know )w you all are". While the message on the »rd struck my funny bone, the :ene is a beauty, one that will saved in our St. Patrick's )ay file. Only a month away? Must get sady. Please register your child early, as the teams fill up fast! Arlene loves McHenry. She also loves me (that's what she said). But -- Our new friend doesn't like the way I pick on her beloved Cubs. (She will probably get used to it). Well, I promised to say something good about her team. What better can I say than I hope they win the National League pennant this year so they can meet our Sox in the World Series. So there, Arlene. Isn't that nice? George "Butch" Freund says he is going into spring training, but didn't say what he is training for. If he makes it as a designated hitter, I'll run the bases for him. News about the town is that a couple of hot-shot bowlers, Ed Buss and Gene Schaefer, were beaten with the greatest of ease by Eddie Bimbo, a 130 bowler. All we know is what we hear. Said I would get a lot of things done after the busy Christmas holiday season. Now, I plan to get at them as REGIONAL PAIRINGS Game One - Tuesday, Feb. 28, 7:30 p.m. - McHenry vs. Belvidere Game Two - Wednesday, March 1 - 7:30 p.m. - Woodstock vs. Hononegah (Rockton) Game Three - Friday, March 3 - 7:30 p.m. - Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2 i Is snow white? No, snow is not white but looks white because of the great reflection of light. Like wise, the sky is not blue. Space and air are actually colorless and if one goes far enough into space, and gets away from sunlight, everything will be black. The reason the sky looks blue is that blue, of all the colors, refracts most easily, and therefore the light from the sun makes the sky blue. Dust refracts red, which explains why the sun's light makes the evening sunset, quite often, appear to be a rich red. Notice Sports Picture Since previous notices (star ting last fall) have not been noted, this will be run from time to time. Being unable to use the many group pictures sent in, a decision was made to discon tinue all league groups except championship teams. Pictures takes by our staff photographers of athletes on the high school level will be selected as to their importan ce. Individual pictures of various sports will be appraised as to their newsworthy value and available space. It was a flood of group pic tures last year that made this decision by the management necessary. c ¥ I PERI" ECT PASSING EQUALS PAIR OF .POINTS -- The McHenry Warriors wasted no time on this quick play during the first quarter of Tuesday's night game against Crown. At right in top photo, Scott Dixon bounces a pass to A1 Reinboldt (at left). Reinholdt turns and leaps above his opponent as he passes off to Doug Oeffling, who in photo at right scores two points. Oeffling led the Warriors with 17 points in their 71-70 overtime loss. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD Crown Tips Warriors In Overtime Thriller, 71-70 soon as the weather warms up. Dick Rabbitt's latest note: "Don't forget the Crown game here Tuesday. They won without you Sat. nite. Are you really a jinx?" Better late than never. A certain individual phoned some time back to say that Bill Lulow bowled a 728 series at McHenry Recreation and our caller would send in a report. I waited. Then I phoned. Success at last! The story ran in the Wed nesday issue. That was a great series, Bill, and McHenry area bowlers join us with a pat on the back. OLD AND WISE SAYINGS: The higher the rise, the harder the fall. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave. - Calvin Coolidge The worst heart trouble is to have no charity in your heart. ~ Bob Hope Little boats should keep near shore. -- Benjamin Franklin By Dick Rabbitt Jerry Howell, senior guard of the Crown Vikings made two free throw; with four seconds remaining in overtime to give the Vikes a hard fought 71 to 70 victory. Doug Oeffling's free throw with nine seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime. Playing without the services of Jeff Partenheimer, their leading scorer, the Warriors grabbed an early lead and were ahead at the end of the initial period 12 to 6. Both teams missed numerous shots during the opening period of play. The tempo picked up in the second period, and during this period many will think that fate played a hand in the Warrior loss. Early in the period, Doug Oeffling hit a fifteen footer, but it was nullified by a foul, on the part of another Warrior. Anyway both teams con tinued their assault on the basket, with a little more success, but the Warriors managed to hang on to a 29-25 halftime lead. Jerry Howell, Viking leading scorer with the help of foul trouble was held to a mere four points the first half. However, once the second half began the young lad proved to the small crowd, why he is one of the leading scorers in the North Suburban. He scored 13 pts during the period, but with Oeffling, Mayer, Bentz, Dixon, hitting the net, the Warriors still managed to hold on to a slim 51 to 50 lead going into the final period. Midway in the final stanza the Vikes took their biggest lead of the night 58 to 55, but Reinboldt, Bentz and Knox all hit to put the Warriors up by three 61 to 58. A three second violation nullified another Warrior basket, and the Vikes came roaring back only to see Oef fling's free throw knot it up with nine seconds left in the game. In the overtime A1 Reinboldt got the Warriors ahead, and after Howell tied it up, Don Bentz connected with a 10 footer to again put the Warriors in the lead. Howell's three free throws gave the Vikings a 69 to 68 lead, then with nine seconds, Mark Mayer came out of a scramble and put the ball in the hoop to give the Warriors the lead 70 to 69. With four seconds left, Howell was fouled, and made both to seal the Warriors doom. A lot of credit is due the Warriors for their fine effort. The favorite Vikings, with & big height advantage were hard put to put the Warriors away in the game. The Warriors had five boys in double figures. Doug Oeffling had 17 points to lead the Warriors. Big Mark Mayer came off the bench to play his greatest game as a Warrior. The big guy had 12 points and came down with some key rebounds. A1 Reinboldt picked up 10 pts, as did Scott Dixon and Don Bentz. With Libertyville here tonight for Parents' Night, look for the Warriors to close out the regular season on a winning note. If they can play like they did the second half tonight, they will chalk up another win.
