It was the last game of the season, an occasion to honor parents of players and cheerleaders. The boys must have been fed well along the line as many of them towered above their parents. Each of the first three quarters of the game ended with not more than two points separating the teams. It looked like the Warriors ran the Wildcats out of gas in the last quarter. Jeff Partenheimer, not spectacular, but steady as a rock, seemed to come through with points or rebounds when the chips were down. The People's Choice, Dick Rabbitt, couldn't escape leading a cheer as the students kept up a steady chant "We want Rabbitt". . McHenry's impressive sophomore team won a 68-63 game that closed in when Coach Blankenhorn trotted out his bench after a comfortable lead. In the varsity game, the officials had a rough time on calls as both sides hooted. The officials won. Elroy Fitzgerald was one of the officials in the sophomore game and showed that his legs still keep him on top of the play. Roy was a scout for the Baltimore Orioles for years, but has switched to the Toronto Blue Jays. He may work his way up to the Sox! Now comes the Regional. The winner is anybody's guess. Come to think of it, those models sitting on the hoods aren't so bad either. March Madness is coming in high school basketball. On Sunday afternoon, I watched February Madness. First it was the Chicago Bulls losing 100 to 99 when a last second, 40 foot shot banked off the boards and through the nets. Then came the Marquette- Notre Dame game as the No. 1 team invaded the N.D. gym. In the first half it didn't seem like the home team belonged on the same floor with the sharp shooting Marquette boys. Freund, passed away last week at the age of 87 years. Listeners never tired of the stories Pete used to tell about the late and beloved Matt Schulien. LAKE REGION YMCfl NEWS McHENRY PIRANHA SWIM TEAM On Sunday, Feb. 19, mem­ bers of the Piranhas Swim team of Lake Region YMCA competed in the Novice Swim meet at Evanston high school. Kevin Hill received a fourth place ribbon in the 50 yard butterfly and a tenth place ribbon in the 50 yard backstroke. Other McHenry area swimmers competing included: Dave, Butch and Diana Kiefer and Matt Showalter. Bob Rule, an NBA All-Star with the Seattle SuperSonics, will conduct a basketball clinic for the Lake Region YMCA at Lundahl Junior high school in Crystal Lake on Thursday, March 2, from 6:30-7:30 for third and fourth grade leagues and 7:30-8:30 for fifth and sixth grade leagues. The free clinic and coaching session is for players signed up for the Youth Basketball association or YBA. The program is the development of the NBA Players association and the YMCA. "YBA basketball puts the emphasis on values and par­ ticipation rather than just winning at any cost," said Phillip R. Baaske, Physical Director. MARCH 1. 1»7* Warriors Came To Play And Escaped Cellar In By Dick Rabbitt The Warriors of Ken Ludwig defeated Libertyville 62 to 52 Friday night before a group of fans and students that had the gym rocking to the rafters. The win enabled the Warriors to escape last place in the North Suburban conference The defeat left the "Cats" in the basement and ended a most dismal season for Coach Larry Leon of Libertyville The Warriors came to play basketball Friday night, and those attending will verify to that statement. Although in the early stages of the game it sometimes resembled football, with players and the ball rolling around the floor, the Warriors *„kept their cool and in the closing minutes put on a passing exhibition that even brought praise from Coach Leon after the game. Partenheimer's two charity tosses and Dixon's basket got the Warriors off and running. Then the Cats began to work the ball, and at the end of the period the Warriors trailed by one. 14 to 13. In the second quarter each team exchanged baskets until the Cats grabbed a two point lead, which Tim Byers immediately tied up with a couple of free throws. Scott Dixon's two tosses put the Warriors ahead by two, and Steve Knox increased the margin before the Warriors hit a cold streak and the Cats came roaring back to take the lead. Again Dixon came to the rescue and his basket in the closing seconds brought the Warriors within two, and they trailed at the intermission 29 to 27. Early in the third period Doug Oeffling's basket put the Warriors ahead for good and seconds later Don Bentz added another to the cause and the Warriors were on top by five. Tim Byers two free throws made it Warriors 38 to 31 for their biggest lead of the night. Then again the Warriors went into a dry spell and the Cats came roaring back again, to tie the score, but Steve Knox made two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the Warriors a 40 to 38 bulge. The final period was all Warriors. With all five Warriors getting into the EARL WALSH Talk about the Fighting Irish. That Irishman named Tripucka did it all. scoring column during the period, and with the deafening roar from the West end of the gym. the Warriors really went to town. Midway in the period with a 56 to 45 advantage, the Warriors resorted to ball control, and put a nifty exhibition of ball handling to the delight of the home folks. With the Libertyville crew forced into fouling, the Warriors took advantage of the situation, and made free throw after free throw to come out on top by ten points. Tournament fever must have hit McHenry. The cheerleaders had no trouble getting the student section to respond. With able help from Brian DiBlassi and Bob Lunkenheimer these lovely young ladies had the West section of the gym roaring from start to finish.
