Zimmerman qualified for the state tourney as a result of placing third in the 167 pound weight class at the Barrington sectional the previous weekend. Although Zimmerman lost his preliminary round match to Tony Banks of Chicago Schurz by a 10-4 decision, he still can claim with pride that he is one of the top 24 class AA wrestlers at 167 pounds in the state. His season record is now fixed at a fine 25 wins, 7 losses and one tie. Winner of the championship match at 167 was Curt Phelps of Joliet West who beat Banks in the second round. Phelps, the third place winner in the same class last year, was one of four unbeaten qualifiers in this extremely tough weight class and finished with a 35-0 season record. Twenty McHenry wrestling fans traveled to Champaign to watch the two day tournament. They were part of a record Saturday night crowd of 10,404 in the Assembly hall to watch the championship rounds, and an overall wrestling tour nament crowd of 35,670 for all four sessions. Steve Ratcliff, Crystal Lake's only state tournament wrestler and the first place winner from the Barrington sectional at 145 pounds, scored four straight wins in the tournament to claim the championship Saturday night. The scrappy senior won his 6-5 championship decision in the final seconds to set his season record at 31 and 6. McHenry fans were delighted to have this fine wrestler from our conference receive a championship medal. Dave Mohapp, senior star athlete from Woodstock, won a third place medal in the 185 weight class with four wins and a loss. The second place winner in the Barrington sectional, Mohapp finishes his Blue Streak wrestling season with a 30-3 record. Other North Suburban conference wrestling qualifiers in the state tournament in cluded the Parker brothers and Mike Jones from North Chicago and Ken Roberts from Mun- delein. Adley Parker at 112 won 2 and lost 2 matches, while his older brother Danny at 126 won 3 and lost 3 matches to place sixth in his class. Jones, son of the head coach at North Chicago, won 4 and lost 1 match to place third in the 138 pound class. Roberts lost his preliminary round match. Antioch district winners wrestling well at the state tournament also included the Gibson brothers from Antioch high school. Jon Gibson, a sophomore, placed fifth in the 98 pound class, while his older brother Martin won a medal for the second year in a row, this time placing sixth in the 119 pound class. A total of 432 qualifiers from 213 different schools competed in the state tournament, 144 in class A and 288 in class AA. The same three schools topped the AA standings as last year, just in a different order. East Leyden of Franklin Park finished first, many points ahead of second and third place Oak Lawn Richards and Joliet West. Class A team standings also listed the same three schools on top as last year, just in reverse order: New Leno^, Yorkville, and Savanna. For the first time in the 41 year history of the State Final tournament, the top three finishers in each of the 12 weight classes from the sec tional competition earned berths in their respective weight divisions at State. The justification for this was borne, out by the placing of 11 third place AA sectional winners among the top six medal winners in the 12 weight categories, including four second place medalists and one third place winner. Hie final wrestling event of the season here in McHenry will be next Thursday evening, March 9, when the wrestling awards banquet takes place. Parents, wrestlers, coaches and fans will gather in the West campus cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck celebration honoring those who have put forth their efforts all during this long wrestling season. PALACE McHenry School League 2-22-78 "Happy Birthday, George," was what five good bowlers were saying as they took home delicious cherry pies to enjoy. The winners (for most pins over average for the second game) were: J. Gallager, M. Teuber, J. Hamilton, M. Holm, and P. Jenkins. Other people must have been celebrating too, for four men rolled over 200: M. Holm (224), W. Coari (206 and 194), R. Homo (205), and J. Gallager (204). For high series we had M. Holm (575), W. Coari (533) and R. Homo (523). The women are not to be left out with E. Rogers (201), J. Hamilton (167), C. Buittner (166) for high games and E. Rogers (506) and L. Estis (484) for high series. With two high game rollers, D&D had a great 2488 and will have a pizza to enjoy next week. R. Justen picked off the 5-7 and a prize and R. Homo got the 5-7, but, alas, no prize. Next week is the last week of regular bowling, so we'll see what happens. Holy Terrors Johnny's Angels Foolers Possibilities D&D's Fearsome Foursome Double Trouble The Marks P&B, Inc. Imps K.
