So far as dogs go, the law says that after a dog has been impounded for three days, it can be adopted out or destroyed by injection. Helping Paws is a Humane Animal Welfare association, whose focus is on saving lives and improving the quality of those lives HP has no shelter and performs its mission at present by placing animals in foster homes with residents of the community until the animals are adopted. HP has been advised by other agencies in the humane field to stay away from ACC entirely because of the disparate purposes of the two and since ACC is under constant fire of criticism. HP disagrees because ignoring a problem is no way to solve it and aid the animals, and has been cooperating with ACC with some significant results. If a cruelty complaint is received by the HP office, personnel screen the call to determine if the person has a complaint that will stand up under the law. If so, the caller is referred to Jack Raehorst, Evidently what puzzles a lot of the public judging from phone input and comments is what exactly does the Animal Control center do, and what does Helping Paws do, and how can the twain meef To ex plain, each was founded for a different purpose and serves the public in a different way^ Animal Control center in Woodstock is coun^-funded and operates as a holding pound for stray dogs; they also handle wildlife calls, large animal calls, cruelty cases, and maintain 24 hour emergency service The building is small and not adequate to fulfill the needs of fast-growing McHenry county. He has never failed to repsond at once and then gives HP follow-up information. When dogs are reported lost to the HP office, the description of the dog is checked with a list of dogs picked up by ACC, and reported each Monday by Jack Raehorst. There have been some matches made this way enabling the owner to recover the dog And since Nov. 15 last year a plan has been in effect that is beneficial to pets, pet owners and the community. If a dog is adopted from ACC within the HP jurisdictional boundary, ACC gives HP a portion of the fee they receive. For this sum HP does the follow-up in vestigation and refunds the fee to the owner when the dog has been spayed or neutered. The purpose is to encourage people to help cut down the pet population and to obey the state law which requires that all females by spayed when adopted through either of these agencies. Owners of male dogs are encouraged to have the surgery with a similar refund. Many do. Yes, there are other^ problems, plenty of them. But they are being corrected as public pressure is applied. To name two - an ACC officer was fired because of the many complaints received about him. And the tranquillizer gun has been abolished because it was improperly administered. HP would like to go on record as stating the ACC fills a vital need in the community and recognizing Dr. Johnson, head of the Health department, and Jack Raehorst for their help in the past, and hopefully for changes in the future. Rescue '50' Presentation March 17 Proceeds of Rescue '50', the snowmobile marathon held Jan. 15 to raise funds for local rescue squads, will be presented in an evening program March 17 at the McHenry American Legion post hall. Total of all pledges collected are expected to ex ceed $7,000, resulting in a 40 percent increase over last year's event. Public support of the snowmobilers in their drive to aid the community was outstanding. Members of eight area snowmobile clubs supplied 113 dedicated riders for the 52-mile ride through McHenry county. Organized by Harmony Snowmobile club under the direction of members Roy and Roye Roadman, McHenry's Sno-Bugs, Sno-Ballers and Moose Sno-Bergs were joined by the Harmony Snow- Trackers, Polar Pairs, Eh- mann's Penguins of Fox Lake, and the Hebron Penguins. The top pledge rider was Jim Wright of McHenry Sno-Bugs with a record $1,009.50 earned. Also raising highest earnings for Harmony Snowmobile club was Walt Low at $580, who was lead guide on the colorful parade. Hebron Penguins' Jim Hilton piloted his sled for $533. Many others rode for hundreds of dollars each, • ' N o r t h e r n I l l i n o i s snowmobilers are showing not only Illinois but other snowbelt states how snowmobilers can help their communities in many ways such as Rescue '50', and as shown in the recent blizzard as volunteer rescue vehicles in time of disaster," a spokesman for Harmony said. All participants and sup porters of the worthy event are invited to attend the program, scheduled to start after 8 p.m., when checks will be presented to the Johnsburg, McHenry, and Hebron area rescue squads.
