PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. MARCH It. tf^ On The Sidelines •y Dick RobbHt Once again rumors are flying around the state in regards to the Class AA regional tournaments. The present four team tourney doesn't seem to be working out from a financial standpoint. Crowds here at McHenry last week were very small. True, the teams involved all had losing records, but one would think with tourney time approaching, that fans would follow their respective teams. The Warriors have an unusual tournament. Hononegah of Rockton has to be about fifty miles from here, and Belvidere thirty-five or more. Playing in midweek, at that far a distance, students just don't want to get on a school bus and go that distance to a basketball game. Teams from other areas in the state face the same problem. It is only in the suburban area where teams are closely bunched, that there is not a lot of travel. Officiating is a problem. We had an official here last week that came from Princeton, 111., a mere one hundred and twenty-five miles from McHenry. Surely there are officials that are a lot closer to McHenry than Princeton. For what it is worth, I would suggest combining the McHenry and Crystal Lake regionals to an eight team affair. The interest is there, the travel light, and more fans would attend the games, even if you spread them over a five night period. Some people have thought that teams should be seeded and therefore draw a bye, thus making the tournament more competitive. It is true that a lot of first round games are a mismatch. But to give a team a bye to the finals would really open a can of worms. The girls are doing just that at the present, but I'm sure there is going to be a lot of objection in the very near future. In the case of the McHenry high girls basketball team, they have beaten four of the seeded teams in their sub-regional. The pairings were made at the beginning of the season, not near the finish, as the boys pairings are made. Congratulations are in order to Debbie Freeland and Annette Dercole on their selection to the All Conference girls basketball team. Coach Pam Schafer is mighty proud of these two young ladies, as well as all Warrior fans. By the time you read this, we will know if the Warriors are still in contention for the Sectional Crown at Rock Valley college. In the Associated Press poll, the Warriors were not given a point. Rockford Auburn was the heavy favorite, followed by Antioch, the Warriors opponent in the first game, then came East Rockford and the Warriors. Strange things have happened on a basketball floor, and the Warriors have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Sure hope that Wayne Gaylord and I will be back in NORTH SUBURBAN BASKETBALL SCORING The I.H.S.A. is waiting until the 1980 football season before making a change. In that season fall practice may start as early as the third Monday before Labor Day. So it looks as if the next two seasons the state playoffs will remain the same, and the games will be played the Saturday after Thanksgiving. If you can recall the past two playoffs, weather played a big factor, as snow and rain along with the cold weather, put a damper on some good football. Also some administrative changes will take place. The large schools put the pressure where it counted, and now have an additional director on the Board, along with the increase of the legislative commission from 17 to 21. Last fall the suburban schools threatened to drop out of the I.H.S.A, and form their own association, the I.H.S.A. took heed to the threat. Don't forget the Bears are coming to town next Thursday. They will play the McHenry high faculty in a basketball game at 8 p.m. at West campus. Tickets are on sale at both schools, as well as business places in the community. Going down memory lane, we take you to St. Mary's gym in Woodstock in Dec. 1946. The Warriors lost in the finals of the County tournament to Marengo. Some familiar names are listed with the Warrior squad, and Beknke from Marengo the 6'7" eenter, went on to play for some good Bradley basketball teams.
