Standing in the background, to the left of Reinboldt, is a proud Coach Ken Ludwig, who has developed the past seven teams into five regional championships, including a "Sweet Sixteen." STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD on Tuesday after the sports section was made up. Trouble is - the events were to take place on Wednesday. With several young people from our area in the events, we are always anxious to give space to their efforts. Kinda tough when publicity comes in so late. They say it is well to plan ahead. One Old Timer, Ernest C. Gilroy, Jr., asks our support in promoting a baseball game or games between Waukegan, McHenry and Johnsburg. This will be for former players 39 years and older. Gilroy will retire as a teacher in the Waukegan schools in June at the age of 59. He has had an active career in sports as a player, coach, athletic director at Fort Sheridan - and more - you name it. He coached at Lake Forest in 1952 and won the Tri-County championship. One of the teams he beat was Johnsburg. But, the Tigers went on to win the state championship that year. Gilroy also mentions those good baseball teams that Algonquin had in years back and wonders if they would like to join the fun of old timer games. Dan O'Shea, Jr., is the one who put the writer on our trail. Dan served as Sports Editor of the Waukegan News-Sun and has been stepped up to a newly created position of Systems Editor. Gilroy s interest in getting started early is that dates for use of diamonds in Waukegan have to be nailed down well in advance. He thinks games would be late in the season. Hope some of you old boys will show some interest and let me know. Dave Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jackson, has been a standout on the McHenry County College basketball team all year and is now an unanimous selection to the Skyway Conference team. > Dave averaged a shade over 24 points a game and was hot on rebounds, free throws and sank nearly half his field goal at tempts. Dave did it all and was the pride of his coach, Bill Butkus, while other coaches wished like all get out that he could be on their side. SEORTS EDITOR Dave will be in the lineup on Friday night of this week for the Junior College All Star game at Danville. This is when the north meets the south. The Jackson family has given this column and sport page a chance to spread a lot of ink for many years. There seems to be no end to it. They keep coming along.
