The friendly ducks are getting restless, making daily visits to the lake to check one of their favorite summer homes. They have been using water melted on top of ice the past few days. One thing that can be said, the ducks are the first to arrive and the last to leave. Last year McCullom Lake was free of ice the first week of March, not so this year. Jerry Raycraft advises, a recent re-testing of McCullom Lake shows the west end of the lake, where dredging was done last year, near the location of the dredge, with an oxygen level of 4 P.P.M. In other areas of the lake tests show 1.4 P.P.M. The fishery biologist is not sure why this is so. Monthly Meeting The regular March meeting of the McCullom Lake Con­ servation club was held Thursday, March 16, at 8 p.m. The meeting was interesting and informative. On the agenda for discussion, the proposed beach for the city of McHenry on McCullom Lake. Reorganization of standing committees; dredging and pledge programs; reports on fish derby, and other fund raising projects in progress. Sound interesting? Why, not attend the next meeting? Coming Up Soon During the next few weeks, through this Conservation News column, your columnists will try to write some background and history on McCullom Lake. To be included will be formation of various groups, organizations, in­ dividuals, including the present McCullom Lake Conservation club. During the coming weeks, we hope to present a dredging schedule for the next five years of dredging on McCullom Lake. Related projects and programs such as weed control, pollution watershed, additional water supply for the lake, will be included. The impact and adjustment, of a proposed public beach for * the city of McHenry will be discussed. Since this lake has been a private lake, this will be new and will make many changes environmentally, financially and in lake management. Hopefully these articles will inform the public what the McCullom Lake Conservation club is all about. Everyone can get interested and involved and make McCullom Lake a lake the entire area can be justly proud of. For the new residents, who have come to our area in the last few months or years, we encourage you t6 get in­ volved in the Conservation club. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 22, 1928) Mayor Peter W. Frett and Rudolph E. Johnson of the Bald Knob hotel on Pistakee Bay had a narrow escape with their lives in an automobile accident late Saturday afternoon while on their way to the William Stratton testimonial banquet at Waukegan. The accident happened at the intersection of Route 20 and the Green Bay road, just outside of Waukegan. The Buick car was almost a total wreck following the crash but both Mayor Frett and Mr. Johnson escaped without serious injuries. The McHenry Kiwanis club will entertain a number of farmers, who will be guests, each member bringing one farmer for the dinner meeting at Bickler's McHenry House. William DeShettey, .from the agricultural foundation, will be the speaker, his topic, "Needs of the Nation." Mrs. Forrest, Mrs. Dunham and Mrs. Quinto, owners of the newly opened cafe in the John Buch building. Riverside drive and Pearl streetef announce, that the Cadillac is now open for business and ready to serve meals. A 35 cent plate lunch will be served between the hours of 11 and 2 daily. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Baron sold their new bungalow on Waukegan street to Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Schoewer. Mr. Baron expects to be transferred to some other .city when the Borden factory closes April 1. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 24, 1938) „ At a special meeting of the City Council on Wednesday evening of this week, the F.M. Melahn Construction company of Algonquin was awarded the contract to surface course the McHenry Country club road. Bids were also received from the Illinois Hydraulic Stone and Construction Co. of Elgin, Chas. E. Giertz & Son, Elgin, and A.P. Freund of McHenry. The low bid was $7,840.13 and the high bid $9,617.88. Probably the first spring suit to make its appearance in McHenry was the new white suit donned by "Peggy" Feltz on Tuesday, officially the first day of spring. Although he has had the suit for some time, it has been saved until spring arrived and now Feltz in his new uniform with his new cart is nicely equipped for a busy season. Since May 1, 1930, he has been ' caretaker of the streets of McHenry, starting his work with the city in the first year of John R. Knox's term as mayor. The McHenry High School alumni association has arranged a special treat for Saturday night. Former champions who have lingered long in our memories will return to the basketball floor in competition with the high school stars of today. It is planned to bring back those great players who packed every gym in northern Illinois some ten or more years ago. Sib "Judge" Whiting will come down from Ringwood to join his old mates. Harold "Zeke" Bacon, now a Cary banker, will be here. Perhaps "Zeke" won't flash the speed and accuracy that dazzled both fans and opposition, but he'll bring back memories of good sport­ smanship and a strong will to win. Jim Fay may be here. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 2, 1953) A bloodmobile operated by the Chicago chapter of the American Red Cross will visit McHenry on April 29 and Woodstock on April 30 and May l to collect blood donations from local residents for the national blood program. In addition to use by the Armed Forces, a portion of the blood collected in the bloodmobile operations will also be assigned for processing into gamma globulin, which has been shown to be effective in minimizing the paralytic effects of polio. Gamma globulin will be provided for children in of­ ficially declared polio-epidemic areas this summer by direc­ tions of the Office of Defense Mobilization. Although there has been a fair return from the Easter Seal sale for support of the Crippled Children association, the McHenry county chapter chairman urges all county residents who have not returned their contributions to do so at once so that the work of caring for physically han­ dicapped may be carried on in the county. Another step in providing a definite recreation program for the McHenry community was taken Thursday evening of last week when about forty local residents, representing local service and religious groups and the McHenry Township Recreation association met at the Legion home to hear a report of a survey conducted during the day, TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 27, 1968) A tragic four-car crash in Wisconsin early last Friday evening took the life of a Wonder Lake school superin­ tendent and caused critical injuries to a second local educator. Killed in the accident was Merl F. Thomas, 57, of Grayslake, who headed Harrison school at Wonder Lake. Taken to Mercy hospital, Janesville, Wis., seriously hurt, was James Bush, superin­ tendent ot jonnsourg School District 12. The Student Senate of Iowa Wesleyan college will be governed by Gary Lock wood, junior from McHenry next year. The new officers and senators were chosen at an all campus election March 20.
