The Illinois Department of Conservation has designated the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 6 -5 to in struct safety education classes, scheduled to begin on Friday, March 31,1978, 7:00 p.m. at the Johnsburg Jr. High School, Church Street, Johnsburg, Illinois. The safety education class is certified by the Illinois Department of Conservation. Persons desiring to obtain a Boating Safety Certificate will be required to attend a man datory eight hours of in struction. For further information, contact the coordinator at 312 587-2403. I TAX FACTS 1 Military pay is exempt from Illinois' state income tax, but Illinois residents serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces or the Illinois National Guard are still required to file a dtfcte income tax return. Illinois law requires ser vicemen and women who claim Illinois as their residence to file an IL-1040 return if a federal income tax return was filed. The return and accompanying W-2 statement, which reports the source of earnings, verify that the income was from military pay and not subject to the Illinois income tax. Military pay exempt from tax includes earnings from: -Full-time service in the U.S. Armed Forces, the Armed Forces Reserves, or a National Guard unit; --Service in the Reserves during a national emergency; -Federal service in a National Guard unit during a civil disturbance or national emergency; --Service in the Reserves or a National Guard unit during annual summer camp training. Military pay earned in those activities can be subtracted on Une 4d of the state income tax return, the IL-1040. Pay for time spent at weekly or monthly training sessions in the Reserve or National Guard is not exempt from the income tax. Pots and Pans Discolored pots and pans (aluminum) can be easily brightened by boiling apple peelings in them for a short time. Sharon Gacek Anne Moore 385-3777 385-6448 Easter Joy Wishes From Correspondents Is Easter spring? Easter baskets? Easter eggs and jelly beans? Our copy of the American Collegiate dictionary says "'Easter 1. an annual Christian festival in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ; observed on the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or next after March 21. 2. the day on which this festival is celebrated." To us, Easter is all of these things, but most important to us is the opportunity to get together with family and-or friends to celebrate both a religious event and a very happy day. Won't you phone and let us share in your Easter Sunday celebrations? Sincere happy Easter wishes to all of you! ASSOCIATION NEWS Absentee ballots will be available March 25 at the home of Anne Moore, 1920 Park lane from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. and April 1 at the home of Jan Heritage, 4218 W. Parkway avenue. Plan to attend the annual general meeting to be held Sunday, April 2 at the com munity house, 1717 Sunset drive. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. The slate of officers nominated for election to the Lakeland Park Property Owners association board includes Lloyd Wagner, in cumbent Harold Bowlin, Frank Sweeney and Len Sierack. The election will have priority at the annual general meeting. People interested in joining the Lakeland Park Property Owners association should contact Clerk Anne Moore whose phone number is listed above. CONSERVATION CLUB NEWS The McCullom Lake Con servation club Shop and Share days are here, they are Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. We hope everyone will stop at the service desk with their cards and reciepts. The proceeds from shop and share will benefit the dredge fund. Fishermen are pulling record numbers of perch out of the lake. They are being caught behind the dredge, and on the channel that was dug this fall. State Biologist Harvey Brown came out to test the oxygen level at this spot and found it to be 4 parts per million which is a good reading. Other spots on the east end of the lake were tested and the readings were very poor. With the good reading on the west end it is hoped that a large amount of fish will survive the winter kills, and the club is anxious to start the spring dredging program. Received a copy of the Dredged Up Recipes cookbook that was compiled by the club. It has sopie really super recipes. No wonder this cook book sold out so soon. The club is planning to go ahead with Volume II, so if you have any recipes that you would like to share please contact Mrs. Ed (Harriet) Hammer or your columnist Sharon Gacek. A trip to the Hawaiian islands does it per fectly. Ernie and Lou La Bay of 4303 Riverview recently returned from a 3-week vacation, flying first to Los Angeles and visiting with friends and relatives, and then on to San Diego to meet with friends and fly to Honolulu. Ernie and Lou stayed in Honolulu, but took trips to all -the* outlying islands. Sight seeing, of course, included a trip to Diamond Head and a tour of the location where the TV series Hawaii Five O is filmed. Though Jack Lord was not in residence, they did get to see where he lives while the series is being filmed. Of course you can't go to Hawaii and not see the Don Ho show. Lou even got a kiss from the island's top entertainer. No trip is complete without a visit to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona memorial, a very emotional experience. The memorial commemorates the fateful day Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and sank the Arizona with all hands on board. Lou says they thoroughly enjoyed golfing in the islands. The courses are super. SNOW SCULPTURE WINNERS The snow sculpture contest sponsored by the Pistakee Highlands Community association was judged Sunday, March 12. The weather finally cooperated and the artists creative juices really started to flow. Eighteen contestants entered the contest. First prize of $50 went to Dorothy Cooley and her 7-year-old son, Tommy, who together created a snowmobile complete with driver. Second prize of a gift cer tificate from a local food mart went to Richie Connery whose creation was a canoe complete with a man rowing it. Third prize went to Tammy Cooley and Denise Feliz. Their creation of an igloo won them a gift certificate from the Cap tain's Anchor. The judges must have had a difficult time deciding a win ner, but the artists really came through with some clever bits of scufpture. Too bad our warmer weather will destroy all this creativity. WEDDING BELLS Wedding bells rang out Saturday, March 11, when Nicole Nugent became the bride of Clayton Koffski. The two were united in marriage by Pastor Roger Schneider in the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, McHenry. The bride is a resident of McHenry and the groom the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Koffski, 4207 Riverview, Sunnyside. Nicole was given in marriage by her grandfather, Nickolas Kuhn. Serving the bride as maid of honor was Pamela Dodson. Bridesmaids were Kim Nugent, sister of the bride; Mary Nugent, sister-in- law; and Jessica Nugent was the flower girl. The groom's brother, Sam Koffski, atended him as best man and groomsmen were Tony Kurowski and Larry Kayler. A reception was held after the ceremony at the Wonder Lake inn for friends and relatives. After a honeymoon in Wisconsin, the newlyweds will be making their home in Sunnyside. ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK Reports of the annual spring dance sponsored by the St. John's Women's School and Home association are that they really rocked. Attendance was terrific with almost 200 people attending. All enjoyed an evening of dancing to music of the 60's and reliving a few old memories. BEARSPLAY BASKETBALL Cub Scout Pack 454 of Johnsburg went to see the charity basketball game at the McHenry high school West campus. The boys enjoyed the game between the Chicago Bears football team and the faculty of the school with the Bears beating the faculty 85 to 83. The boys were able to purchase souvenir pictures of the football team. An exciting evening for all. BIRTHDAYS This week's birthday greetings go to Josephine Mullen who has her special day March 19. Scott has announced that he has successfully con cluded a 1977 suit against a McHenry county chemical plant whose emission of am monia gases into the at mosphere caused residents of the town of Union to evacuate their homes in 1976. Scott said the Southern California Chemical company plant in Union has agreed to pay a $5,000 penalty for its violations of the state's En vironmental Protection act and to prevent any more of the continuing series of industrial accidents at their facilities responsible for the emission of ammonia gases in 1975, 1976, and 1977. The plant reclaims cupric oxide (copper-based acids) from contaminated etching solutions. The cupric oxide is used as an animal feed additive and as a wood preservative. In a companion action last September, Scott obtained ah* injunction against Southerti California which required that the facility cease operations until air pollution equipment had been installed. As a resist of the injunction, the company installed the minimuas equipment necessary to redu£ emissions and also undertook additional actions aimed at preventing a recurrence of the ammonia problem. SS Hurricane Set To Sail Singing and dancing in the State room and a political satire based on McHenry county personalities will be among standout shows aboard the SS Hurricane. That's the ship set to sail April 14-15 and April 21-22 when more than 150 volunteers combine talents and energy to sponsor the second Hurricane Happening, a fund-raising event to benefit Marian Central high school. Three shows are planned, ranging in length from 30 to 60 minutes. Six lounges with specialized entertainment are ready to function. They range from the Brig to the Dispen sary. The Boiler room will feature the Hartland Express amid the pipes, turbines and churning propellers. A major change this year will enable people to obtain reserved tickets for the three shows. Tom Parsley, co- chairman, said the wait to see the feature attractions was the lone dissenting factor about the 1977 benefit event. The State room will be reminiscent of a Gaslight club. One of McHenry's favorite entertainment attractions will be on stage throughout the sailing trip. The Andrew Sisters proved a 1977 hit. The trio really is not Laverne, Maxine and Shirley-but Bob Adams, Don Howard and Don Weingart of McHenry. A1 Smith is in charge of the Main Deck, an ambitious program to be presented in the gymnasium area. Parsley announced several other chairmen: Tom Harding and Tom Parsley, co-chairmen; Herb Brin and Kerry Muldowney, tickets; Tony Sicillano and Bill Miller, security; Chip Marback and Lou Hartlieb, program book; Vicky Bottari. publicity; Joan Bauer, Ted Scheder and Loretta Rosenmayer, show rooms; George Thompson; beverages and Bill Banked, finances. Each show has its own special committee. An additional group of volunteers is planning the various added attractions. Ambitious decorating wil} transform the first floor of Marian Central into the SS Hurricane, complete with a' gang plank, pennants and other nautical attractions.
