Being a member of the flycatcher family, it thrives almost ex clusively on flying insects which are caught in mid-air. Some spiders and occasional berries are included in its diet. The Eastern Phoebe is a dull- colored, unattractive bird- mostly grayish browns and whites~but is a friendly and familiar species to the many people who know it. Oc casionally, immature phoebes attempt to spend all winter in Illinois; however, they are rarely successful. The earliest migrants sometimes appear by late February, but the majority arrive in late March and early April. Owing to the lateness of harsh wintry weather, the early-arriving phoebes en counter survival problems. The phoebe is well-adapted to two widely different habitat.; creeks, lakes and rivers where steep banks or man-made structures such as bridges occur and, farm yards or abandoned buildings which provide shelter and convenient nesting ledges. One important feature of each habitat is the presence of trees, vines or 'shrubs with exposed perches where the birds can sit and keep a watchful eye out for passing insects. One conspicuous habit of this sparrow-sized bird is its con s t a n t t a i l - w a g g i n g - - a ^ characteristic which im mediately identifies the species. In spring, the phoabe has no trace of wing ba$s-- another field mark which separates it from the otper similar-plumaged flycatchers; however, in the fall, some phoebes do have wing bars thereby adding confusion tq^its true identification at that tgne of year. The species name was derived from its plaintive, tyo- notesong: "Feebee" which can be heard all spring and much of the summer. Eastern Phoebes occur as a breeding spe^es throughout much of the United States and Canada east of-J^he Rocky Mountains and nortf|tof central Oklahoma and nortlwrn Georgia. There are two otnei types of phoebes, the Say's Phoebe and the Black Phoebe, which occur west of where ̂ he range of the Eastern Phoebe's ends. -j Nesting begins in April and a typical phoebe's nest is placed on a firm support under: a bridge, in a culvert, on a rojjgky overhang, in an abandoned building or on a window shutter and is constructed of mud (usually), mosses or grasses which is then lined with hair or fine grasses. A normal clinch consists of five white eggs which require slightly mbre than two weeks of incubatftn. The male does not assist with the incubation duties, but does assist in feeding the younjffor the fifteen or sixteen daysthey remain in the nest. Phoebe3&re often double-brooded which means they may raise as nifeny as ten to twelve young a year. With this many phoebes around, their affect on infect populations is appreciated^ kL physical harm. Even if se»us and sometimes perma nt harm did occur, a wo an seldom had access to ' gal protection offered to q ler victims of assault and bat ry Wife beating cannot condoned under any by JOSEPH COOLS s t a f f p s y c h o l o g i s t news from th» Family Scrvtce and Mental Health Clinic of McHenry County (Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This ar ticle is "Coping - Wife Abuse".) Wife abuse or wife beating is not at all a new phenomena, as may be supposed by the only recent upsurge of publicity about it. It seems, however, that only recently has wife beating become intolerable. It is not that broken arms, beaten faces, ruptured eardrums, and hurried visits to the emergency room are on the increase. Frequency and intensity of the beatings have not increased either. What has happened is that it is suddenly in vogue to deplore such activity. In the not too distant past, most cases of "minor" wife beating was passed off with such remarks as "she must have deserved it," or "she was aggravating and nagging him to the point where he lost control." Thus the humiliation and degradation of another person was condoned and even applauded, provided one did not pass the limits of serious be ir- cumstances. Fortunately, t ire are no alternatives availafe to a person who is the victi of physical abuse in a marrflge The primary consideration's to be to offer immediate id complete protection to le victim. Often this me ns resorting to signing a c n- plaint with the state's attor y, since battery is a crim al offense, and must be treate as such. Often the realization at jail sentence is a i al possibility is enough to curt lie temper of the "man" of he house. Marital counseling can be effective in treating the n- derlying anger and need or domination, if there i: a positive commitment with I th parties that all physical al se is to stop immediately, wijjno exceptions. No marital coun selor will agree to see a coible while beating and physj pal abuse continues unabated.
