Registration Continues For Women's League Registration for the upcoming season of McHenry Women's Softball league will be held for the second time Saturday, April 8, at the Chalet, 1211 N. River road, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Unlike other seasons, registration of all previous players and new players is essential in order to participate. The twelve teams have been divided into two divisions, Tuesday night and Thursday night. The schedule provides for two rounds of play within each division, and inter- divisional playoff and an All Star game. The playing field will once again be West campus and all games will start at 6:45 p.m. The league encourages any women interested in joining a team to come to registration for information. There are many openings and a brand new team to fill. The next MWSL meeting is scheduled for April 11, 7 p.m., at the Oak Park hotel. Equipment will be distributed at that time. It has been called to my at tention that the name "Chuck" Hiller didn't ring a bell at a recent meeting where younger people gathered. That isn't too startling when I think back about a year and remember mentioning Babe Ruth. Babe, who? The kids remembered Hank Aaron, a more recent star. The caller asked us to tell them something about "Charlie" Hiller. Born in Johnsburg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hiller, "Chuck" attended ^McHenry high. He was a good athlete in high school, played baseball for the Johnsburg Tigers, college baseball, then went up the ladder to the major leagues. Hiller played second base, third base and the outfield for the Giants and Mets for seven years. Then came the shot heard 'round the world. In the 1962 series against the Yankees, "Chuck " became the first National League player to hit a grand slam home run in a World Series game. Whitey Herzog must have taken a fancy to Hiller's hell bent for victory attitude. He vowed that if he ever managed in the majors, Hiller would be one of his coaches. He kept that promise. When you go to Comiskey Park this season and the Kansas City Royals are in SPORTS EDITOR town, be sure to watch their third base coach. None other than "Chuck" Hiller will be in (or near) the coaches' box. In cahoots with Fred Meyer and Bob Adams, the one and only Tom Murphy attended the McHenry Rotary meeting last Thursday and made a presentation. It was a well- planned guest appearance. How could I tell that he meant me when he started out with "One of your old -- old -- old members". Tom explained that he has two sons in Chicago who are great White Sox fans. When Bill Veeck took over Comiskey Park, he had the astroturf taken up and put down real sod. Tom's sons acquired a patch of the astro and had it beautifully mounted. I dunno. Maybe Tom had it mounted. After some remarks about this column and" reference to the fact that S.I.H. thought he knew more about running the team than the coaches, the beautiful gift was presented to me. An extra slab of the green was presented to be made into a hairpiece. (Thought up by "Big" Adams). 'Twas very touching, Tom. And our helpers, Fred and Bob, sat through it like innocent little boys.
