The winter we have just ex perienced made it almost impossible for candidates to wage effective campaigns where personal communication with their constituents could be achieved. "The weather leading up to the election day was probably partially responsible for the extremely low turnout of persons who voted in the primary throughout the state. We need to get these elections out of snow, holding them at a more sensible time." Illinois had the earliest primary election in the nation this year. Sen. Schaffer said there are other compelling reasons to cahnge ,.the primary date. "Voters and candidates would all be better served if the primary and general elections were closer together. Cutting the length of campaigns would reduce their costs and increase public interest," he indicated. There are at least a dozen bills pending in the legislature that would change the primary to dates ranging from May to September, Schaffer noted. "There is a lot of support for a May primary. The weather would be favorable and holding it before the vacation season begins would heighten par ticipation," Sen. Schaffer said. "There would be some complications for legislative Off (REG. Schaffer said he will support an attempt to get one of the bills calling for a May primary election date out of committee and before the General Assembly for consideration this spring. Senator Schaffer also ex pressed a desire to hear from his constituents as to exactly how they think when the primary should be held. An earlier poll conducted in the 33rd legislative district in dicated that the public was , almost evenly divided between a March primary, a May primary and a September primary. pERVICENEWsl California Boot Camp For Marine Recruit Kurt Herman Walter, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Walter, 2810 Spring road, McHenry, has enlisted in the Marine Corps Delay Entry program.
