McHENRY 385-0333 On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbltt The McHenry high spring season in athletics started off with a bang last weekend. Coach Ken Swanson's baseball team won a double header defeating both Grant and Woodstock in a double duel meet here last Saturday. The Warriors pounded Grant 8 to 2 in the opener, led by the pitching of Barry "Bear" Paulsen, who struck out 7, walked only 1, and faced thirteen in four innings of hurling. Jeff Meyer had a pair of doubles, and Brian DiBlasi had a homer to lead the hitting attack. In the nightcap the Warriors, after building up a big lead over Woodstock, had to hang on for an 11 to 9 win. Bobby Sharp was the starting pitcher, and gave way to Bob Hansen after three innings when the Warriors had built up their lead. However, errors, walks and the Streaks getting a few hits in the later innings made the game a lot closer than was anticipated. Anyway it was a nice way to open the long twenty-eight game schedule for the Warriors. Gary Gray's tennis squad pulled the unbelievable by winning their own quandrangular. In defeating Hoffman Estates, Rockford Boyland and South Beloit die tennis Warriors notched a feather in their cap. BothRockfordBoylan and Hoffman Estates have access to indoor facilities, and their squads have been practicing for many a moon. Several of the competitors from these schools have played in summer tournaments, and have had some state tourney experience. It was a nice win for the netters, and no doubt word has been passed that they are a team to be considered in future matches. A lot of talk about the girls basketball tournament last week in Champaign. Seems that six of the eight schools in attendance were coached by men, and one coach went on record saying that only women should coach the girls teams. Because of reducing of teachers in the various schools, we are going to see more men coaching girls athletics. With Title IX stating that girls are going to have equal opportunity, this is the way of life. As Paul Judson of I'.VIil'. t - ri./tl.M>r..Al.l.U - I'lVIII/ll, /»» nil. «, uio Hebron Green Giant fame told me last year. Paul is the girls coach at Dundee, "I have never enjoyed coaching as much as I have coaching girls basketball . This seems to be the idea. The girls are willing to learn, listen, and do what they are told. For Paul it must have rubbed off, as his team was one of the Elite Eight. One of the two women coaches was Linda Brady of Crystal Lake. For you old time Warriors fans, Linda is the daughter of the late Max Brady the long time successful coach at Crystal Lake in both football and basketball. Max was indeed a legend in his own time. He was not only a great coach, but a perfect gentleman at all times. Congratulations are in order for Tommy Les the eighth grade coach at Montini.Tom has been selected the coach of the year in District 6 by the Illinois High School Coaches association. This is indeed quite an honor for Tom. because District 6 covers a wide area, and to be selected not only by your peers, but by a group of high school coaches is saying that you are doing something rig^t. So a tip of the fedora to Tom. Ken Swanson's nine won another game on Tuesday by defeating Carmel of Mundelein 6 to 2 for their third win of the young season. Adjusts to you and your grass.
