The society is marking its seventieth an niversary in 1978, and one of the ways it would like to celebrate is with a dramatic reduction in the number of cases of blind ness due to cataract. The highest number of cataract cases are among the elderly, and over 6,300 persons in the U.S. lose their sight to cataract every year. Yet cataract blindness is curable In most cases, and cataract ex traction is one of the most successful operations per formed today. More than 95 percent of the time, persons who undergo cataract surgery have useful vision restored. Cataract is an opacity, or clouding, of the eye's lens which blocks the passage of light needed for vision. In cataract surgery, the clouded lenses are removed, and their job is taken over by prescribed cataract eyeglasses, contact lenses, or sometimes lens implants. "The nation's elderly have traditionally been a di/ficult population group with which to establish contact," says Virginia S. Boyce, NSPB's executive director. "Fear, isolation, the 'drop-out' syn drome, resignation and apathy are the obstacles we face in reaching older persons. We needed aggressive ap proaches." For the past several years NSPB and its state affiliate organizations have been developing new paths of communication to the elderly. Approaches include: ...Programs brought directly to elderly audiences - to residences and social centers for the elderly, and nursing homes. The program package includes the film, "Cataract," starring actress Sylvia Sidney; a talk and question-and-answer period; locally prepared directory of eye-care facilities; the pamphlets Cataract and The Aging Eye. ...Direct service projects on the community level. State affiliates set up free eye exam programs for the elderly in cooperation with local hospitals, eye clinics or other SPRING SERVICE SPECIALS TUNE UP SPECIAL 8 CYLINDER O O CO CM 6 CYLINDER- $160 0 4 CYLINDER $120 0 •*2.00 EXTRA FOR AIR CONDITIONING •PARTS EXTRA "CHEVROLET ONLY •VANS HIGHER FRONT END ALIGNMENT >4* $ 1 2 95 •PARTS EXTRA (IF NEEDED) •CHEVROLET ONLY •TRUCKS AND VANS SLIGHTLY HIGHER LUBE AND OIL CHANGE sK4* $£78 'UP TO 4 QUARTS PENZOIL MOTOR OIL •CHEVROLET ONLY SHOCK ABSORBER SPECIAL FRONT & REAR SHOCKS INSTALLED ^ $5900 ^ •INCLUDES PARTS & LABOR •CHEVROLET ONLY •TRUCKS & VANS SLIGHTLY HIGHER •TAX NOT INCLUDED 3 8 5 2 1 0 0 I W Y T O N < H K V R O L K T health care facilities. Those who are found to have eye problems receive an ap pointment on the spot, for further eye care as needed. ...Cooperative programs with agencies serving the elderly. ...Outreach through the public media -- to carry the messages on the availability of informational materials, local educational programs and service projects on eye care for the elderly. "Our goal this year will be to expand the program, reaching greater numbers and new audiences," says Mrs. Boyce. "The greatest incidence of cataract is among those 65 and older, and our potential audience is some 22 million persons. About 75 percent in this age group will develop cataract, but only 15 percent of these will suffer vision loss to « degree where it interferes with normal activity. But why should these people suffer a needless restriction on their later years? Surgical treat ment can return them to a world of vision." Throughout its 70-year history, NSPB has worked toward eliminating needless loss of sight. Fully half of all cases of blindness can be prevented. Working with its state affiliates, and under the guidance of a national group of health care professionals, the Society conducts a sight-saving program including direct service to individuals, public and professional education, and research. Chock full of humus and trace elements, Now a set-up like this pays big dividends. He never knew a life of ease This busy little tiller Who dug, ate and cultivated To make this land much richer. Knowing the value of a well balanced food He set to raising a healthy brood. For better, for worse, thru thick and thin Born to the soil they worked therein. Gardeners, look what you did With chemicals and sprays To wriggling soil builders That saw better days. Now they lie perished From pain-poisoned tummies In soil they had cherished -Petrified mummies. For years they churned and cast away Until you condemned them to die. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, In their lonely graveyard earthworms lie.
