Mrs. Veronica Devney of Northfield, Minn., felt almost helpless when a missionary told of the needs of the poor in the south. But she sent $5 checks to seven textile firms asking for remnants to sew for the needy. To her surprise, her checks were returned with 600 yards of donated materials. Along with volunteers recruited from Northfield's Catholic and Protestant churches, Mrs. Devney sewed fifty cartons of clothing for a poverty area in Mississippi. More and more material arrived. A New York City Jewish textile merchant suggested sending clothing and blankets to Veitnam. He made s h i p p i n g a r r a n g e m e n t s through the Minneapolis Naval Air station and soon tons of bedding, soap, medical sup plies and even sewing machines were enroute. Mrs. Devney named her project Operation HOPE (Help Other People Everywhere). Her idea grew and spread to groups in twenty states. She began travelling to start new groups and kept in contact with them all through a newsletter, SOS, suggesting needed projects. Amazed and delighted with HOPE'S growth, she said, "I feel strongly that I am just going along with God. Just prior to all this, I sincerely prayed that God would show me how to make the world better. I know that any prayer, if it is sincere, is answered, and no matter how incapable you Tips on meat selection and preparation will be offered in a four-session seminar by McHenry County college and the University of Illinois Ex tension service. Both beef and pork will be used. On April 26," Dr. John Romans, an University of Illinois' meat specialist, will present slides showing grades of meat and explain how meats are graded and what this means. Romans is on the staff of the animal science depart ment at the University of Illinois, and has co-authoi'W thirty-five publication on meat. * May 3, Jacque Phileatreau from the National Livestock and Meat board will speak on the areas of nutrition, packaging, corn-fed vs. grtt^s- fed beef, the cholesterol con troversy, and laws gbvermng the meat industry. Also during the evening, preparation" of meat will be introduced, and a carving demonstration by a local chef will follow. The final evening of the seminars will feature a cookout on the patio at McHenry county college, with demonstrations and instruction given by representatives from the Pork Producers and Livestock Producers association. There is a nominal fee for all sessions and registration may be done in person or by calling the college.
