MARGARET ONEIL Clerk of the Court (Pub April 5,12,19,1978) What Just One Person Can Do Alfred Boedekker, Priest for the Poor A Franciscan priest, 74, who calls himself a "middleman for God," daily performs a modern miracle of the loaves. With only trust in God and the generosity of people, he has in 27 years served over 12 million free meals to the poor. In 1950, shortly after Father Alfred Boedekker became pastor of St. Boniface church in San Francisco's tough Ten derloin district, he opened St. Anthony's dining room. He figured on 200 showing up that first day. They fed 380. In the recession the numbers climbed to 2,000. One Thanksgiving they fed 4,000. The aging priest has managed with no public relations campaign and no government funds. He has started a thrift shop, a clinic, an employment office, a residence, and St. Anthony's farms. He estimates 8,200 men have restored themselves there, spending over the years an average of 30 days milking cows, tending to pigs and farming crops. "Our main work now is the elderly," says Father Alfred. "This tremendous group of people is getting to be the new poor". The priest hat started the Adult Benevolent association to help San Francisco's 170,000 elderly persons. He is planning a rally for the aged in the city's Union Square. "Forty thousand old people here are living alone," he says,"...!' want to further national consciousness about shut-ins." Father Boedekker, with eight others, has won the 1977 Thomas Jefferson award for community service, given by the American Institute for Public service. But the Franciscan, who has given so much, talks of what he has received, of Divine Providence and of the 26,000 persons, who have helped in one way or another. "My life," he says, "has been a fulfillment." What can one person do? A Iqt - anytime, anywhere. TURN ONS WAS IT COLD DURING YOUR SOUTHERN VACATION LAST U/INTER?
