I PAGE 18 - PLAINDEALER -WEDNESDAY. APRIL 28. 1978 I Twice Told Tales iSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS FIFTY YEARS AGO <Taken from the files of April 26, 1928) Road activities on Routes 60 and 61 have again started in earnest in this vicinity and the pouring of cement was com menced on Monday The strip of pavement from McHenry north toward Ringwood, a distance of two and one-quarter miles, will be finished first and grading oA this stretch was in full swing last week The work has started *n this city where Route 61 intersects with Rouje 20 and will continue north on Ringwood road to connect with pavement already laid last fall. The $60,000 bond issue was again defeated on Saturday by a vote of the people5almost two to one against it. This is the second time that the bond issue has been defeated in the course of a few weeks and it looks as if the majority of the voters are against bonding the city for this amount. The Community high school stands abreast of the times in looking forward to one of the outstanding events of the school calendar, namely the band concert on May 8. From the day that school convenes in September until it dismisses in June, one can hear a group of young would-be artists patiently at work. Mr. Koerner has thirty-six members in this band and they, together, have prepared a good program to which you are invited to listen on May 8 FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 5, 1938) The annual meeting of the City Council was called with the mayor and all aldermen' present. The board members werp pleased over the balance of $8.117 80 shown on the treasurer's report. Considering the sums expended during the past year for improvements in the city, the financial con ditions seem very favorable. Sixteen Class "A" tavern applications were received and passed upon. Nicholas Nett was the only tavern operator who did not apply for a new license. Five additional licenses were issued, including the McHenry Brewery, Jimmy Smith at the McHenry Country club, Karls' Cafe, Bolger's Drug Store and the Fox Pavilion. Mayor Overton made his appointments for the current year, naming the same officers who have held positions during the past year Residents of McHenry will no doubt be happy to learn that the City Council, grade and high school boards, are cooperating to give the city a summer playground program. Mr. McCracken has been hired as instructor TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 'Taken from the files of April 30, 1953) McHenry's City Council convened for its annual meeting Tuesday night then, as per practice, met in special meeting to act on' business pertinent to the fiscal year starting May 1. The first meeting marked the end of the terms of service of two aldermen, Charles W. Vycital and Wm. H Althoff, who did not seek reelection Replacing these men were Edward Buchert and Donald Johnson. Both took their oath of office and took their place at the Council table for the special meeting. Special attention was given to the interesting and complete report of the city treasurer, Thomas F. Bolger. The report showed a balance of $14,673.76 on hand in the general fund, with approximately $3,000 in bills to be paid at the annual meeting. The surplus was not great but close followers of the financial structure of the city were pleased to end up in the black. Robert Switzer of McHenry has been honored by the Out board club of Chicago by being chosen among the first whose names will appear in the newly established Hall of Fame for Region 7, which includes Illinois. TEN YEARS AGO • Taken from the files of May 1, 1968) At a dinner at the McHenry Country club, the McHenry County Bar association presented the Liberty Bell award to Earl Walsh, McHenry. For thirty-five years Walsh has given McHenry distinguished community services. John Looze, McHenry attorney, who made the presentation, said Walsh exemplified the high standards for the award, a layman who gives community service that strengthens the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under the law. Walsh has served on many city community fund drives and is now involved in the Cancer Crusade as chairman. He is a past president of Rotary, past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a <fchr6nicler of sports and community affairs through a column in the local paper for more than thirty years. The school year of 1968-69 will be a crucial one for Grade School District 15 of McHenry, with crowding in the Junior high school and elementary schools reaching a point which requires special emergency action. „ .. . Alderman William Bolger has assumed chairmanship of the newly formed McHenry Beautification council, the sole purpose of which is to devote every effort to make the city more beautiful. It is the hope of the nucleus group that even tually all business people and individual citizens will be made aware of the benefits to be obtained by participation.
