Tripp, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Tripp of 802 Ringwood road, is par­ ticipating in exercise "Com- tuex 2-78" in the Atlantic ocean and Caribbean sea He is . serving as a Crewmember aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Biddle, homeported in Norfolk, Va "'Comtuex 2-78" is a 21-day exercise involving more than 4,000 personnel and twelve U.S. Atlantic Fleet ships, a Coast Guard cutter and two French destroyers It is designed to improve the overall readiness of participants and to enhance command and control procedures at sea. Training encompasses all phases of naval operations, including antisubmarine, antiair and electronic warfare, plus gunnery and missile firing tactics. Rear Admiral R.L. Walters, USN, commander of Cruiser Destroyer Group Eight, is tactical commander of the exercise. Tripp joined the Navy in November of 1975. Lt. T. Thomson Assigned Aboard '"4 USS Enterprise Navy Lieutenant Tim Thomson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Thomson of 1302 E. Route 134, Ingleside, is par­ ticipating in the major allied exercise "Rimpac '78." • He is serving as an officer assigned to Attack Squadron 196, based at Whidbey Island Naval Air station, Oak Harbor, Wash. His squadron currently is embarked aboard the air­ craft carrier USS Enterprise. Conducted in the mid-Pacific ocean area adjacent to Hawaii, "Rimpac '78" involved ap­ proximately 22,000 men, forty- two ships and 225 aircraft from the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This marks the sixth annual joint maneuvers conducted by naval forces from "rim of the Pacific" nations. - "Rimpac '78" tests and evaluates the combat readiness of participating units. Areas covered include antisubmarine warfare, air defense and carrier operations, at-sea rearming and replenishment, plus missile firings at Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Hawaii. Overall commander for "Rimpac '78" is Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Jr., USN, commander of the U.S. Third Fleet.
