Legion Auxiliary Traveler Describes Peruvian Poverty The McHenry county council of the American Legion auxiliary held its April meeting at Fox River Grove recently. April being Foreign Relations month, Chairman Audrey Wagoner introduced as her guest speaker Mrs. Edna Brooks. Mrs. Brooks is presently serving as foreign relations chairman in her district and division and is a past department chairman. Mrs. Brooks is a retired geography teacher who, along with her husband, loves to travel and has done so ex tensively all over the world, including the county of Peru twice. The speaker told of the ap proximately 1,000,000 children in Peru who will have no op portunity to go to school unless they get help. She described how these Peruvian people live in one-room adobe huts with thatched roofs and how chickens, ducks, animals and family are all housed together. The farm land is poor and their main crops are corn and potatoes which are grown in various colors. Mrs. Brooks finished her talk by showing the many novelty items made in Peru that she intends to award as prizes in her district and division. Peru is the country that the American Legion auxiliary is giving aid to build schools in its rural areas. Collections made at each auxiliary meeting will go toward the financing of schools for these people. The Girl State chairman announced that the county tea will be held in Crystal Lake Sunday, April 30, and asked that those planning to attend contact her immediately. Membership Chairman Ethel Lewis announced that Huntley is now 100 percent plus one. Music Chairman Lenora Bierdeman led the group in singing spring songs and Happy Birthday was sung to Bea Rucker and Ethel Lewis. A letter was read by the secretary from May Chesak who respectfully tendered her resignation as music chairman due to illness. She requested that Lenora Bierdeman be allowed to fill her term of of fice. The Veteran's picnic will be held Tuesday, May 2, at the Woodstock park. The American Legion district picnic will be in Huntley July 30. Each unit is asked to donate toward the picnic to help with expenses. The next council meeting will be held in Hebron Friday, May 5.
