Nowell, a junior, competed in this event with a hamstring pull, and finished second with a time of 18.5, just a second behind Jenkins. Nowell was scratched from further events because of the injury. _ STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD £: ?5 si u s s On The Sidelines By Dkk RabWtt Had a nice letter from a former Warrior Steve George of the 1970 baseball team. Reminded me that the Warriors of that time had won eleven in a row, before dropping the first game of a doubleheader to Barrington 2 to 1. The Warriors, however, came bade and won the nightcap 8 to 3. In the 1970 season the Warriors won 18 lost 3 and tied Elgin. They finished second to Barrington with a 12 and 2 record, while the Broncos finished on top with 13 and 1. The current Warriors of Ken Swanson just tied the record, but lost Tuesday to Mundelein 8 to 2. They have created a lot of excitement around the school and community as well as in the North Suburban. With eight games to go in the conference, the Warriors are still in the thick of the battle. Let's hope they can get back on the track tomorrow in a doubleheader at Lake Forest. Tonight is the Annual McHenry Relays. They win be run for the thirteenth time. A new format will be in style for tonight's meet. Because of the large number of schools participating, seventeen in all, the field events will have three participants instead of the usual four. The pole vault and 100 yd. dash will be open to individuals, with each school allowed to enter two boys. Steve Green from Waukegan West has one of the best shot put records in the state this year. He threw over fifty- nine feet last Saturday at North Chicago. Hoffman Estates has a hurdler who at this writing is the best in the state. So come out to McCracken field tonight, not only will you see some good teams, but outstanding individuals as well. Relay records are on the sport page. From early reports some of the records may be broken. Speaking of breaking records the "Water Warriors" of Mike Shanahan are doing a fine job this season. Whitey Hall finally cracked the five minute barrier in the 500 freestyle last week. He has also broken his own record numerous times in the 200 freestyle. Bob Berry has a couple of records to his credit Sophomores Jim Murray and Mark Betancourt likewise have set records this DIVOT DOLLS M.C.C. The team has also set a mark by winning eleven meets so far this season. Their previous high was ten, and with several meets to go should add to the record. Everyone thought that when they changed swimming to a spring sport, that the boys would lose interest. This may be the case in some schools, but not at McHenry. Coach Shsnahan and his squad are to be congratulated for § fine job, they don't have many spectators, but they sure can swim, and rack up the victories. Toby Scott's sophomore tennis team won their own Invitational for the third time in the four year history of the meet. Again the tennis teams both varsity and sophomore's are doing an excellent job, when you consider the wester we have been having in this part of the state. Girls sports are in full swing with Softball and track. Next week we hope to give a full report on their activities. With rainouts and other weather problems it becomes difficult to keep up with all the activities at the high school. s £: % To start the 1978 season on a note of fun and sociability the ladies of McHenry Country club teed off their opening event Tuesday the twenty-fifth by fielding sixteen teams for a Tennessee Dog Fight. Under beautiful sunny skies ac companied by blustery winds, the team of Judy Smithson, Mabel Smith, Irene Kinneman and Fran Herrmann turned in a great score of 40 to win first place in the 9-hole event. Five strokes behind with a 45 was the team of Liz Nolan, Char Zwissler, Mitzi Kenton and Linda Puccio taking second place. A 46 earned third place for the team of Nell Fidler, Bernice Dolce, Rita Sayler and Alta Gierke. Tied at 47 each were two teams sharing the honor of fourth place. They were the teams of Mil Leisten, Dot Baker, Jeannie Remke, Floss Miller and Joanie Buss, Mary Mutschinsky, Martha McCrary. To further sharpen their golfing skills before the full tournament season gets under way the ladies will ease into the month of May with a two-week 3-best-ball Calcutta scheduled the second and ninth. Following that on the sixteenth and twenty-third there will be a Match Play event. Under the direction of Games chairman (woman?) Bernice Dolce and her committee it looks like a great season coming up so here's to Happy golfing! Liz Nolan McHENRY REC Ladies Tues.
