PAGE 18 - PLAINDF.ALER -FRIDAY. MAY 5, 1978 Conservation News (McCullom Lake) McCULLOM LAKE 5-YEAR DREDGING Dredging Progress The dredge is in operation on McCullom Lake. Presently it is working off West Shore Beach. As of today, a cut approximately 12 feet deep, 5 feet wide, 500 feet long has been made in this area. The CETA employees have been trained to absorb some of the work load; however, it does take time for them to learn the operation, and get actual on-the-job experience. Anyone wishing more details on dredge progress can contact the operations chairman, Bill Winkel. * , f Please To those who did not make their donation to the dredge fund in 1977, won't you please give the conservation treasurer, Mrs. Ed (Harriet) Hammer a call and make arrangements to do so? Or send over-due donations to the McCullom Lake Conservation club P.O. Box 523, McHenry. 1 I I | j » T Everyone having access to, and use of the lake should send in 1977 contributions now as 1978 pledges are also coming due and payable. If the dredge is to continue to operate we must have funds. Hopefully the dredging will not be stopped because of lack of funds. Let's all contribute our fair share. Cookbook Volume one of the Conservation club cookbook is no longer available. For those who placed orders and have not yet received their books, please contact Mrs. Gene (Ann) Huff in McCullom Lake, and make arrangements to pick them tip. Mother's Day Surprise Just in time for Mother's day, the McCullom |.ake Conservation club is sponsoring a bake sale at Hornsby's, in the Market Place Shopping center, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday* May 13. All proceeds go to the dredge fund. Persons wishing to donate cakes or other bakery items, please contact any of the following people: Mrs. John (Sharon) Gacek, Mrs. Ed (Harriet) Hammer, Mrs. Peter (Lois) Kasper, or Mrs. Charles (Joyce) Larson. Let's use some of those "dredged-up" recipes and make this effort a big success. Lake Report Jerry Raycraft, Conservation club president, advises that Fishery Biologist Harvey Brown shocked the lake April 27. McCullom Lake did not experience a total winter kill, at least some of all species survived. However, Raycarft noted Bass seemed to be hardest hit, suggesting no Bass of any size be taken from McCullom Lake until after July 1, when the spawning season is over. McCullom Lake History Parts (final) Last week, in part 5, lake privacy, funding and dredging provided the topic. This week, the final article in the series will be devoted to a five-year dredging program as developed and recommended by engineer, Ed Hammer, as follows: The proposed dredging program for McCullom Lake as shown on the accompanying map is as outlined. The original program by volunteer labor was to be approximately five years. With the assistance of CETA labor, the program is anticipated to be reduced. _ It is not the intent of the dredging program to alter any shoreline by filling in with spoil. Sufficient land disposal areas are available within pumping distance to last for three years of the planned five- year program. The shoreline is established by the height of the spillway at the lake discharge into the Mass pond, or 756.88 feet. The established lake level by the United States Geological survey is 757.0 feet as shown on all U.S.G.S. maps. This level is consistent with the low lying lots around the lake with regard to flooding. Temporary drought or low water levels are not considered as water shorelines. Several legal opinions have been handed down which preclude the changing of any shoreline by our dredge program. Therefore, the permission for removal of silt and-or sand has been asked of the people who own the land under the lake. It is possible to dredge the lake entirely on the Lakeland Park Property Owners association property. However, it is easier to set up the dredge lines on the planned program as shown. One legal opinion given as follows: "that as long as McCullom Lake is owned by more than one entity, anyone permissively can use the whole lake to fish, swim, and boat and no owner can materially change the quality and depty of the water to the detriment of the other owners.M The section shown on the drawing illustrates the dredging intentions at the present five beaches and two new beaches to be established. The present beaches are the L.P.P.O.A. East and West beaches, West Shore beach, McCullom Lake beach and Polish Cain$> beach. The two new beaches will be the Lydia Home for ChilgNn beach and the City of McHenry beach. These are shown m the drawing. Dredged sand material will be placed on the ice fay either truck haulage or pumping, whichever is cheapest and easiest to accomplish. The shaded areas illustrate the 50-foot wide, 15-foot deep trenches which ring the lake. There are two phases of weed control which are shown on the drawing. The dredge can be used as a "lawnmower" with the roots removed 2 feet below the lake bottom level. The program as shown is a basic program which can be modified or added to as conditions warrant; however, the plan is as recommended by an environmental geologist as the most practicable for our lake. Hopefully the results of the program will be: Springs unsilted, weeds controlled, deep spots for fish to survive winterkill and beaches made fit for swimming. The program requires assistance from all of the residents to work. Money is needed through pledges, donations and all of the fund raising techniques being pursued. & Our Goal In presenting this series of articles, hopefully more people will understand, and become more aware and actively involved in this program for McCullom Lake. We have attempted to inform all persons interested in the lake what we are trying to accomplish, and what is necessary to realize goals and carry out a good lake program. Perhaps many questions have been answered, while others may have been raised. In either case let the Conservation club hear from you. Most importantly, please participate. For some, participation may be attending meetings, serving on committees, etc.; for others, donating time for dredging or related work. There are several worthwhile projects for fund raising now in progress and being planned for the future that need people to help. For those unable to help in other ways, cash donations would be most welcome. The lake is for everyone having the right to use it, to fish, boat, and swim. It also means sharing the responsibilities for its upkeep, so there is a way all residents, men, women, and children can help. Everyone's help is needed if we are to make this program work and save McCullom Lake. On-going activities, and reports on progress of dredging will appear in this column. Proposals for obtaining additional water supply will be coming up shortly. McCullom Lake Conservation Club Mrs. Harold (Audis) Bowlin 385-8910 Legal Notice STATE OF ILLINOIS ) )SS.
