So I Hear EARL WALSH SPORTS EDITOR The Old Bridge Softball club rebounded from an opening game loss to win four straight games and capture the con solation trophy at the Dug Out Inn in Trevor, Wis., last weekend. Matched against the Wizards of Carpentersville in game one Saturday morning, the Bridge r was hampered by poor defense and inconsistent hitting and was soundly defeated 18-8. The Wizards opened the game by scoring seven runs in the first inning and later added a four-run fourth inning and a five-run sixth inning to secure their victory. The Bridge scored three runs in the second inning, one in the third and four in the fourth to complete their scoring for the game. They could manage- only seven hits in the game, all of which were singles. Doug Freund paced the club with two hits. Bridge Wins Game Two Scoring three times in the first inning on Greg Freund's long home run, the Bridge went on to capture their second game in the tournament by a score of 11-5 over the Stooges later in the da^. Freund's blast scored Doug Freund and Joe Dehn who had singled before him and the Bridge was on their way. They added one more in the second and four in the third on the strength of a double by Ron Miller and singles by John Pitzen and Steve Rohrer, coupled with two Stooges' errors. Doug Freund's third hit of the game, a double in the fourth inning, led to another run for the Bridge in the fourth inning. . The Stooges who had scored one run in the first and fourth innings, added a pair in the fifth by bunching three hits together. They closed out their scoring with a single digit in the sixth inning. Pitzen walloped a two-run home run in the Bridge half of the sixth inning, following a single by Gary Gilpin. Doug Freund with three hits and Pitzen with two hits, in cluding his home run, paced the club. Game Three a Thriller Game three of the tour nament found the Bridge losing 11-6 to the Corkers going into the bottom of the seventh in ning, but saw them rally and score six runs to win the game which was played in sub- freezing temperatures. The Bridge was ahead during most of the game, scoring three times in the third inning and twice in the fourth to lead the Corkers 4-1 after four innings. But in the fifth inning, the Corkers scored five times thanks to three Old Bridge errors to take a 6-5 lead and added two more runs in their half of the sixth to lead 8-5. A double by Ron Miller and a single by Rohrer made the score, Corkers 8, Old Bridge 6 going into the final inning. A single, double, and a triple helped by an Old Bridge error scored three more runs for the Corkers who apparently had a safe five run lead going into the bottom haslf of the last inning. A single by Dave Schaefer, followed by singles by Tom Les and Dehn, a fielder's choice .and an error, set the stage for a triple by Miller which tied the game. "With one out, Pitzen hit a long sacrifice fly to score Miller to win the game for the Bridge. Miller was the hitting star for the winners, netting a single two doubles and a triple in four trips to the plate. Rohrer added a triple, single and two walks to help the cause. ' Bridge reaches finals An eleven-run second inning propelled the McHenry team to a win in their fourth game, played Sunday morning, enabling them to reach the finals of the consolation bracket. The Old Bridge defeated Murphy's Pub 13-3, in a game shortened because of the ten- run rule. Fourteen men batted in the second inning for the Bridge md pounded out nine hits for ..heir eleven runs. Home runs by Schaefer and Les were the big blows of the inning. The only offense Murphy's could muster was a three run outburst in the third inning. Bill Brennan, playing his first game of the season, paced the club with three hits in three at- bats, while Miller had two hits and scored three times. Bridge Captures Trophy The Bridge continued its winning ways in the final game and defeated Murderer's Row 17-7 to win the consolation bracket of the tournament. Murderer's Row opened the game by scoring four times in the first inning on the strength of five hits and an error. The Bridge countered with a run in the first and six in the second, with a two-run home run by Les highlighting the inning. Murderer's Row added two runs in the third inning with their second home run of the game and trailed 7-6 going into the last of the third. Old Bridge scored five more in the third, with a long three- run homer by Gilpin scoring Miller and Greg Freund who had singled. Murderer's Row scored what ended up being their final run in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Three Bridge errors allowed the run to score. Four runs by the McHenry club in the fourth inning and one in the sixth secured the victory. Les with a home run and a double, Gilpin with a home run and a double, and Miller with three hits, including a triple, paced the winners. Just learned that O'Brewery, Green - Pearl of whatever you wish to call the famous old landmark sets up free drinks for the crowd every time a Chicago Cub player hits a homerun. My mother wouldn't feed us, thinking it would be an insult to the hostess. Well, we played spin the platter or some such games, but no food came out of the kitchen. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD We ate the apples in a bowl on the dining room table. Finally, Bertha announced a special game We were to take the ietters of our first name and write a sentence. That's when the fun started. My s^itence went this way: Eats Are Rather Late. Bertha's mother, a grand old soul, brought out the food promptly. Trouble was, Winkel told my mother what I had done and she was ready to disown me. President Carter's plea for individuals to act in curbing inflation is a noble idea. As to its success, I have my doubts. Income for municipalities, counties, states and the federal government is at an all time high. So is spending! Prices have skyrocketed and inflation is nourished. Cutting down is always for the other guy. The general attitude is cut down, but don't touch my share of the pie. So - if you see us lifting one for the Cubs some night while dining at the corner of Green and Pearl, you will understand. When in O'Brewery, do as the O'Breweryites. Setting them up for the crowd in the days of the Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig combine would have been costly. Then came Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle to gang up on the fences. Henry Aaron and anybody else would have kept the bartender busy But, this is for the Cubs If Kingman doesn't get the range, it won't cost the management much this year. Getting together after the Bart Yegge funeral we found ourselves with some schoolmates of old McHenry high. Bertha Schiessle Jensen, Ella Newman Buss and Mildred Kinsala (what the heck is her married name?) were there and, of course, haven 't changed a bit since high school days. Sorry I missed out on some of the chatter since they ganged up at the other end of the table. Could have added a few little memories of the '20s. Wonder if Bertha remembers when she invited the crowd to her house for a party? It started at 7 o'clock 'cause we had to get home early in those days. As usual, "Red" Winklel and I were taking off for the party together. And were we hungry! 4
