PAGE 7 - PLAINPEALER -FRIDAY. MAY 5. 1978 TWO MILE RUN - and at the mid mark, Warrior Sue Moulis (right) has a short lead for second place. Sue lost the lead and finished third with a time of 13:44. It was a good run for the freshman girl, as she competed with varsity members of the other two schools. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD A SECOND PLACE WIN for Sue Haddick In the discus event at McCracken field Monday. Haddick. a freshman, threw for a distance of 87*9". She was also a member of the 889 Medley relay team that captured a first over Crystal Lake and Zion-Benton. Other Warriors in relay were Judy Honning, Sue Hutchinson and Carrie Mortell. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD MENS 16" SOFTBALL Hiller Construction The supriseof the league last year, Hiller Construction is expected to make the playoffs again this year. After years of floundering between fourth and eight place, the team rebounded last year and finished in third place. Hiller's handed Het- termanns its oniy defeat during the entire season and returns a line-up similar to last yefcr's. Bob Rowden, an infielder until last year, made the switch to pitcher and proved very effective and returns to pitch again this year. Pete Blackburn, fully recovered from a leg injury, will catch and provide right- handed hitting power. Vinnie Freund will play first base and occupy a position in the middle of the batting order as he has in years past. The remainder of the infield will be manned by Bill Nichols, a strong right-handed hitting shortstop; Steve Hill, another right-handed hitter who will probably open at third base; and Mark Schultz, who will see action at second base and short- center field. Jim Jaworski will play outfield and infield throughout the season. Jaworski bats right handed, but is an excellent opposite field hitter. Jim and Dan Quinn will play outfield positions during the MA8011. Jim is a good hitter, capable of hitting to all fields and can hit with power. Norm Schiller, an off-season acquisition is battling for an outfield position and could play because heIs one of the few left handed hitters on the club. Hiller Construction is capable of beating any team in the league when their big bats are hitting. However, a lack of high average hitters who get on base consistently hurts the team in the long run. Softball experts also realize the necessity of left-handed hitting necessary to com pliment a lineup to Rive it needed balance. Hiller's comes up short in the iefi-handeu hitting department and a weak outfield could be exploited by a strong hitting team. The big problem facing new manager Wayne Patterson is getting men on base for his power hitters to drive in. The power is there, if it can be put to use. Hautsinger Concrete Two years ago, Hautzinger Concrete suprised everyone in the league by reaching the finals of the playoffs. Last year, the team did a complete turn-around and finished far down the standings in sixth place. As is a problem with other teams in the league, con sistency plagues Hautzinger. The team has plenty of proven, talented players who can win. Lack of motivation appears to continually hamper the team. The outfield appears solid, where veteran all-star left fielder Paul Morenz returns to head the cast. Don Prazak, the center fielder of last year's Sunnyside team, will also play in the outfield. Prazak is a power hitter, capable of hitting for high average and probably will play center again this year. Tim Farr, center fielder a year ago, is back again and may move to right field or infield to make room for Prazak. Farr could possibly play short-center field to try to improve the weak Hautzinger infield. Tom Blenner, who had a good year at the plate last year, could earn a starting role again this year. Blenner is possibly the fastest man on the team and his speed makes him a offensive threat. The infield provides many question marks. Vern Peicfsuii will plsy somewhere in the infield, possibly first base, due to the retirement of last year's first baseman Jim Heard. Peterson is a right-handed hitter who can also play shortstop or third base. John DeCicco has been added and is expected to see plenty of action, probably at third base. DeCicco adds needed left- handed hitting to the lineup. Jerry Miller, a strong right- handed hitter will probably open the season at first base, although he may be moved to pitcher as the season progresses to keep an extra bat in the lineup. Bernie Klapperich who pitched last year, will be on the mound again this year, but needs to contribute offensively with more regularity than in the past, to stay in the starting role. Jerry Brodin has been added this year and will be a definite offensive weapon. Brodin is a very strong hitter, capable of hitting the ball out of the park consistently. Gib Kurtz will be present again this year in a utility role. A fifteen year veteran, Kurtz could see plenty of playing time because of the lack of infielders on the club. The apparently weak infield needs to be improved if Hautzinger is going to contend for a playoff position this year. If the defense improves, and the starting players perform to their capabilities, Hautzinger would have a chance of On The Sidelines -- ^ By Dick RaWMft The 13th Annual McHenry Relays were held last Friday night under ideal weather conditions. Seventeen schools were to take part, but Waukegan East failed to notify Warrior officials that they would not attend. This was really in bad taste. For you fans who are not familiar with high school athletics in the state of Illinois, any event whether it be a varsity game or on a lower level, is generally sealed with a contract Not to fulfill a contractus strictly a no-no. If this were to happen in a football or basketball contest, the school not fulfilling its contract would be held responsible for part or all of the gate receipts. The same deal goes for officials. Unless something of a disaster has taken place, they are expected to attend and fulfill their obligations. Waukegan's excuse was that they had just put in a new all weather track, and it had to be sealed before they hosted their own relays on Saturday. Contracts were sent out over a year ago, so Waukegan East at that time knew that their meet would follow the Warrior Relays. To say the least McHenry officials are unhappy with Waukegan. It put a lot of shuffling of events, and extra paper work on the part of meet officials last Friday night However, they were not missed and the meet ran off on schedule. Coach Trent Richards of St Charles claimed "it was the finest suburban meet he has ever sera in over twenty years of coaching." He added "the competition was just great". Many of the coaches remarked of the condition of the trade. Following a long line of great men who have taken care of the outdoor facilities at McCracken Field, Joe Schmitt, Wally Coari, Earle Cooper, Bill "Lefty" Kreutzer, our good friend Tom "Twig" Miller had the trade in excellent condition. The young fellow put in a lot of hard work, and many hours of his time to insure good conditions last Friday night. McCracken Fidd also has the two finest baseball fields in this part of the state. This is no aeddent, again "Twig" does an excellent job in keeping the fidds in good shape for the Warriors. So from all of us Warrior fans we say to "Twig" a job well done, keep it up, we appreciate what you are doing for Warrior athletics, and we know the students fed the same way. The Warrior thinclads won a nice triangular at Zion last Monday. To say the least, the weather was a bit on the cod side over on the North Shore on Monday. Tomorrow they travel to the Woodstock Invitational. Only four schools will partidpate, the Warriors, Rochdle, Rockford Boylan, and the hosts the Blue Streaks. A sue team event would seem a little better, more competition, and a better balance of events. Girls sports are in full swing at McHenry high. The trade team is improving with every meet, and the Softball teams are beginning to find the winning ways. Hie coaches are doing a fine job, and like their counterparts, the boys, are having a difficult time with this cool weather. Well one of these days it will get warmer. Coach Ken Swanson's baseball Warriors are still going strong. They are now 15 and 1 on the season, and by winning Tuesday over Crown have kept themsdves in first place in the North Suburban. They are getting excellent pitching, timdy hitting, and until the Crown game had a minimum of errors. This is what it takes in high school baseball. As the dd saying goes "You will kide in more runs than you will knock in". The Warriors haven't been guilty of too many errors this season, and as a result have an outstanding record. Gary Gray's tennis team has two meets next week in warming up for the conferernce meet at Munddein on the 12th and 12th. Monday they nl»v waunnnHa here, and on Tuesday they travd to Cary." Two games are scheduled with the first game starting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday's action finds The Fox Hole meeting Coppermine in the first game and Old Bridge playing the Sunnyside Inn in game two. Both Fox Hole and Old Bridge should be in contention for first place throughout the year, and Coppermine plays could ball at times, defeating Old Bridge all three times the two teams met last year, while Sunnyside enters the league with many new faces and could have a tough time getting started. The games will be played at the VFW and two games will also be played on Thursday night. r Marian Central I | Sports Notes ! ~ In recent tennis action the Hurricanes of Marian Central registered some impressive victories on both varsity and frosh-soph levels. With Libertyville runners on first and third, Warrior pitcher Nancy Glick threw a pitchout to catcher Deb Freeland. Freeland then threw to second baseman Chris Connell, who in turn took the cut-off and whipped the ball back to Deb. and the Liber tyville runner from third was a dead duck. In the Grayslake contest Capt. Cathy Lauer led the at tack with 3 hits. Chris Connell had a triple, Teri Dalton, Nancy Glick and Terri Bohlman all had two-baggers.
