BEG YOUR PARDON Sorry, but the article in last week's issue about the great Pinochle hand held by Olivia Hiller recently, was incorrectly reported! She held a perfect hand - two runs and two extra aces. McHenry, III. Parkland Students To Work On Recycling Drive v READY, AIM..Captain Flo Chesnick fires an M-60 machine gun in the Staff Soldiers Cup Competition at Odenwald Forest, Germany. She and five other nurses were the only USAF entry in the competition, surprised competitors by outscoring 22 other teams. Saturday, May 20, is the day set for McHenry's monthly third- Saturday recycling drive to be held at the Market Place parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students and teachers from Parkland school will be on hand to provide labor the day of the drive and will be working along with the McHenry County Defenders to see that citizens' properly prepared newspapers, bottles, cans and aluminum are moved along in the second step of the recycling process. Funds earned by the groups working on the drives have been used to provide scholarships and sponsor educational programs. Cam pings, equipment. has been purchased, AFS has helped support its Students' Abroad program, tennis courts have been resurfaced, sets of educational books have been purchased, class trips have been financed, and the list could go on and on. Recognition goes to all those people who take the time to prepare their recycling materials, are willing to learn what can and what can not be recycled, and who make the effort to bring their prepared materials to the Market Place parking lot on the third Saturday of every month. For those not yet involved in recycling who would like to help the environment by decreasing the amount of trash that ends in landfills throughout the county; for those who live in outlying areas who would like to cut down on the amount of throw-away material they must pay to have removed; and for those who would like to help community groups- here are a few gudielines to follow. 1-Newspapers should be tied securely in both directions in bundles that can be handled by the workers. Free rope is on hand at each of the drives for any family wanting to take some. 2-Clear, green or brown glass bottles should be clean and have any plastic or metal removed. 3-All-steel cans, such as t h o s e v e g e t a b l e s c o m e i n , should be washed, have labels removed, ends cut off and tucked inside, and flattened to save space. 4-Ali-aluminum products, such as TV dinner trays, siding scraps, and all-aluminum beverage cans should be clean and flattened as much as possible. Most pop and beer cans are neither all-aluminum nor all- steel, and consequently can not be recycled because of their bi metal quality. Those must be disposed of through the usual trash disposal. Rather than buying beverages in non- returnable containers, the McHenry County Defenders encourages use of returnables. The per ounce cost is much less and the environment benefits from this action. Those with large quantities of prepared material to be picked up or with questions, should call either Mr. Anderson at Parkland school or Mrs. Wm. (Alice) Howenstine.
