Offer Biology Course Learn about the plants and animals of northern Illinois in a field biology course offered this summer at McHenry County College. Both land and water organisms will be collected and studied. Methods and techniques of collection, preservation, mounting and identification of plants and animals will be emphasized in this eight-week course. Ecology principles in their broadest sense will be considered. Students will collect water samples and test them for bacterial levels, dissolved oxygen content, and light penetration and will relate these quantities to the chemical and physical factors of the local environment. Field trips are planned to the Volo Bog, Illinois Beach State park and Starved Rock to observe the relationship of local organism to the surrounding environment. Students may select their own projects or subjects for preservation or mounting. Action projects such as letter writing, impact analysis and citizen awareness presen tations will also be considered. The course will help one be more knowledgeable about the environment and en vironmental problems. . MAIN ST., McHENRY 3 85-7661 1 I VI [ This Week's Migrant RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD - By Vernon Kleen Drawing by Aura Duke ("This Week's Migrant" Series prepared and sponsored by The Illinois Audubon Society) If you have ever seen a hummingbird in Illinois, you cotld be certain that it was the Riiby-throated Hummingbird. Although there are about fif teen different hummingbirds in the United States and over 300 different species in their native haunts of North and South America, the Ruby-throated is the only one in Illinois and eaitern North America. The hummingbird is the smallest bird in Illinois, being a mere 3 inches or so long in cluding its long bill. It is most commonly found near flower gardens or in or around woods where wild flowers grow profusely. The birds feed on nectar and small insects at tracted to the flowers. When available, hummingbirds do find special feeders, designed especially for them, attractive. On first appearance, a buzzing hummingbird may be confused with the common sphinx moths which act much in the same manner-both have the quick stop-and-go movements, darting flight and rapid wing beats. However, on seeing the long bill and characteristic patterns, there would be no confusion. Hum mingbirds often hover, helicopter fashion, while feeding on the flowers and are the only bird species capable of flying backwards. Their wings move so rapidly that only a blur is observed. the most conspicuous color of these hummingbirds is the metallic green of both the mjtles and females; their un- defparts are whitish. In the bright sunlight, and viewed from the proper angle, the iridescent red throat of the male is quite gorgeous, at other times, the throat appears black. Spokesman George Nowicki said sixty-five persons will represent the woodstock- McHenry area at County Stadium in Milwaukee June 14- 18. Nowicki said 50,000 are an ticipated for the convention from northern Illinois, Wisconsin and portions of Minnesota and Iowa. The Witnesses are utilizing some of the largest sports stadiums in the country for this series of international meetings. They include four covered facilities: Astrodome, Houston1, Texas; Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana; K i n g d o m e . S e a t t l e , Washington; and the new Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. Nowicki added that 760,000 persons are expected to attend the twenty conventions in three languages: English, Spanish and French Five conventions are planned for Canada with an attendance estimate of 145,000. The theme of the convention is "Victorious Faith." "There are many issues confronting society today," Nowicki said. "These include changing moral standards, emphasis on materialism, social problems, energy crises and an accelerating arms race. The convention program will stress the value of faith in the Bible as Christains face these issues and other daily problems of life." Full Designation For HSA Ruby-throats arrive in early May and remain through September and are rather common during the summer. During the nesting season the male performs a series of courtship flights which remind one of an arc of a swinging pendulum; however, he takes no part in any nesting duties. The nest is beautifully constructed, and is about the size of a half dollar. It resembles a knot on a limb and is readily confused with one. The female makes the nest out of small plant fibres and bud scales, places lichens on the outside and keeps the entire nest together with spider webs. The two tiny white eggs are about the same shape and size of a small bean. Even though the eggs are small, sixteen days of incubation are required; the young leave the nest when they are about two weeks old. When feeding the young, the female jabs her long, needle-like bill down their throats and regurgitates food into their stomachs. The hummingbird's bill is not a lethal weapon. As small as hummingbirds are, they are remarkable travelers. Each year they make a 500-mile non-stop migratory trip across the Gulf of Mexico. They spend the winter months in Central and South America. Next Week: Eastern Pewee The first four of Illinois' eleven Health Systems agen cies (HSA's) to be recom mended for full designation have been announced by Roy W. Armstrong, Jr., executive secretary of the Statewide Health Coordinating coun^jl. "Full designation," he ex plained, "allows an HSA greater autonomy and clearer responsibility for the development of health care resources in its health service area." One of the agencies is the Health Systems agency for Kane, Lake and McHenry counties in Cary, (HSA population 787,000). Armstrong said that full designation is recommended only after review of the HSA's budget, plan and application by the Statewide Health Coor dinating council, and with concurrence from the Region V office of the federal Depart ment of Health, Education and Welfare. He said that the budgets, plans and applications of the remaining seven Illinois HSA's are currently in the process of being reviewed by the Statewide Health Coordinating council. from HISTORY'S SCRAPBOOK DATES AND EVENTS FROM YESTERYEARS May 26, 1945--Almost 20 square miles of Tokyo are ablaze following raids by United States B-29 bombers.
