I American Legion Auxiliary News Forty-one members and six guests were on hand recently to honor the Gold Star members at the annual Gold Star potluck dinner. The Gold Star members present were Evelyn Justen, Eleanor Strache, Isabelle Thompson and Angela Freund. Mary Kantorski, Gold Star chairman, presented each Gold Star member with a corsage and a gift. Americanism Essay winners and their mothers were in troduced by the Americanism Chairman Pat Borcovan. Mrs. Borcovan presented Chris Bradley, McHenry Junior high, first place winner, with a United States Savings Bond; second place winner was Mark Schnieder of McHenry Junior high; and third place winner was Chris Iacullo, also of the McHenry Junior high. Mr. Schnieder and Ms. Iacullo received cash awards for their efforts. A very impressive memorial service, with Chaplain Eleanor Reid and President Lydia Fenner, was held for departed member, Clara Nell. It was announced that Memorial day services would be held at the City park Tuesday, May 30. Assembly time is 9 a.m., with the program starting at 9:30 a.m. Parade time is 10 a.m. The parade will stop at St. Pat's cemetery and at St. Mary's cemetery to pay tribute to all deceased veterans and auxiliary members. Betty Wehrheim and Dorothy Larson will represent the auxiliary in the parade. All members of the McHenry unit are asked to attend these services, and if possible, to march in the parade. The Gold Star mem bers will be honored by riding in cars. A short business meeting was conducted by President Lydia Fenner. Midge Scharf, Poppy chairman, announced that this year was a very good one for contributions for poppies, in spite of the rain and cold weather. On behalf of the American Legion and auxiliary and V.F.W. and auxiliary, she would like to acknowledge the community for their very fine cooperation and assitance, in our efforts to help the disabled veterans. Pat Borcovan was appointed as head of the nominating committee. Betty Lou Smith, Lois Crouch, Helen Bir mingham and Susan Borcovan will serve with Ms. Borcovan on the committee. It was an nounced that installation, to be held in July, will be a triple installation, with officers of the World War I Barracks, legion and auxiliary being installed. Ms. Borcovan announced that she had presented an outside flag to Landmark school and that the kin dergarten children par ticipated in the ceremonies. President Lydia Fenner announced that two new chairmanships have been added to the auxiliary programs, blood and bowling. She also announced that the eleventh District picnic would be held Sunday, July 30, at Dieke park in Huntley. A donation from the McHenry Lions club was acknowledged. Rehabilitation Chairman Reba Owen announced that a bus load of veterans from Elgin hospital would be brought to the Legion post home and will be served a chicken dinner and be entertained by the legion and auxiliary members. She acknowledged the gifts and cookies that were brought by the members. Foreign Relations Chairman Ruth Mrachek announced that she had compiled a scrap book on Peru and liad entered it in the Eleventh District com petition. Pearl Cooper, com munications chairman, an nounced that she too had en tered a Press Book for district competition. Delegates to the Eleventh District convention, held Sunday, May 21 were selected and they are Lydia Fenner, Ruth Mrachek, Lauretta Homo, Pearl Cooper, Barbara Brice, Midge Scharf and Betty Lou Smith. Lydia Fenner, Pearl Cooper, Eleanore Reid, and Grace Latimer will represent the unit in Morris at the second division meeting June 11. June 4 is the date for the Junior's Father-Daughter banquet. Birthday greetings were extended to Catherine Ed- strom, Mary Kantorski, Italia Mazzoni, Eleanor Strache and Karma Barczynski. Happy Anniversary greeting were extended to Eleanore Reid. Lillian Bolger was not present to receive the Attendance award. Theresa Huska was chair man for the Gold Star potluck dinner, with her committee of Theresa Blake, Dorothy E. Miller, Jane Grothman, Barb Messer. Marilyn Miller, Bonnye Reith, Helen Brut, Debbie Pickett, Julia Varese, Susan Borcovan, Sally Bujak, Loretta Meyer, Jr., Marie Freund, Annelise Bauer, Jane Miller, Mary Stine, Lottie Bykowski, Carolyn Bauer and Karen Alford. Cathy Covalt and Kathy Fenner will be refreshment chairmen for the June meeting to be held June 19. Election of officers will be held at this meeting. Film Slides Depict Life In Sweden At the May 15 meeting of the Wonder Lake Senior Citizens, eighty members enjoyed the slides shown by Neellie Cina of her trip to Sweden. At this meeting fifty senior citizens had their blood pressure taken. The next meeting will be June 5 to make plans for their picnic July 24. Members are asked to come with ideas and helping hands to make the picnic a success. Members who have paid their 1978 dues on or before June 5 will receive name tags free of charge. The best course to fol low in most political con versations is the silent one.
