PAGE 12 - PLAIN DEALER -WEDNESDAY. MAY 31. 1978 » • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • % Keepin' Healthy By Mary Richards One of the major health orjblems in the United States today is stress and its effects on our health. What is stress, and now does it affect health? Stress can be defined as the physical, mental and chemical reactions of our bodies to anything that threatens, frightens, prods, confuses, frustrates, worries or thrills us. Stress is anything that speeds up, keys up or tenses up our bodies. It is anything that pushes us. We are all under stress every day. Without it, we wouldn't move, think, get out of bed or care. We need a certain amount of it. Health problems develop when too much stress develops and becomes more than one person can handle alone. How does stress affect our bodies? Messages from the nervous system reach the hypothalmus gland, which notifies the pituitary and adrenal glands. The pituitary- adrenil system then pumps hormones into the bloodstream. These hormones have the effect of speeding the heart rate, increasing respiration and stopping digestive activity. This "alarm system" prepares your body for reaction to stress-either physical action (fight) or running away (flight). If you repress reac tion, and there is neither fight nor flight, then your body is keyed-up and off-balance. This kind of repression can lead to ulcers, headaches, backaches, palpitations, rashes and other ailments. A person under stress may be so tense as to cause muscle cramps. Tight neck, shoulder and upper back muscles may lead to headaches. Other tight muscles may cause backache. Tense muscles, increased heart and breathing rate brought on by stress can cause insomnia. Fatigue not brought on by physical exertion may be another symptom of stress, as are prolonged periods of boredom, depression, listlessness, dullness and lack of interest. Drinking too much, com pulsive eating or eating too little may also be symptoms of stress. A feeling of palpitations or heart-skip can be caused by the increased rate of heart beat which results when your stress alarm is triggered. This can lead to a vicious circle - stress alarm causes heart-skip, which results in fear of heart-skip, which in turn triggers the stress alarm, causing more heart-skip. In other words, worrying about the symptoms of-stress can cause more stress which then causes more sytnptoms. For many people, religion or close association with a group can be an effective antidote to stress. Others may need a more specific approach to reducing stress. Avoiding stress- prtoducing situations whenever possible is one way to reduce stress. For example, en vironmental stressors such as excessive noise, crowded iditions or heavy traffic can be reduced with a little' ning. A change of job, or a change in attitude towards your jo >, may be helpful. R< evaluating your talents, abilities and goals may be in orler. Recognizing that there ar: economic or political forces be yond your control, and ac- cc pting what cannot be ch inged are important steps in re iucing stress; although re agnizing what can be ch inged is a help, too. Relaxing tense muscles, m klerate exercise, (such as w; Iking), sleep, hobbies or so neone to talk to are also h« pful in the reduction of st ess. 'ust keep in mind that each of us is under some form of stress ev eryday. We need a certain amount of it to motivate us, although too much stress in too a time can be harmful, if we are able to un- tand and recognize stress, can learn to cope with it. you want more information it stress, write to: Illinois ent of Public Health, ision of Education and rmation, 525 West Jef- Springfield, 111 62761. w< ARE YOU MOVING? Subscribers are requested lo provide immediate Jiotice of change of address Ko The McHenry Plain- ealer, 3812 W. Elm St., IcHenry, II. 60050. A eduction of one month from the expiration of a Subscription will be made where a change of address Is provided through the 3ost Office Department Slate Fizical Festival An invitation is extended to celebrate a day with play Saturday, June 17, the date set by McHenry County Easter Seal society as the day of games, a Fantastic Fizical Festival, at Woodstock city park from 2 to 10 p.m. Now in its planning stage, Fizical Festival will consist mainly of games, with a^ new approach and guidance to traditional sports. Some are brand new, some have been played for hundreds of years. The games incorporated in Fizical Festival will get people back into moving again, using action and energy. Many of the games can be played with much opportunity for skill and strategy. Others have no object except to get people together to enjoy themselves. One of the con cepts behind Fizical Festival is that participation is fun, not competitive, and not at all concerned with who wins. There are no losers. Just an example of the games that will be played are new frisbee, frisbee golf, human pinball, people pyramids, pieing, egg toss, snake-in-the- grass, new volleyball, hug tag, skin the snake, islands, clench a wench, tug of war, amoeba race, planet pass, parachute game, lap game, etc. The philosophy of the games is to play hard, play fair, have fun, nobody hurt. On the side lines there will be food concessions, craft and art stalls, prizes, kissing booths (male and female for equal opportunity), fishing contest, entertainment, an after games dance and much more. Fizical Festval will be designed specifically for all age groups. The activity in the games involved will range from moderate to very active. The number of participants per game, depending on the game, is from two to "the more the better". Age, sex and size does not determine ability to paly. If one can breathe he can play. He built the tower that carries his name and in addition he designed both the frame for the Statute of Liberty and the locks for the Panama Canal. Children There's only one beautiful child in the world and every mother has it. The easiest way to teach children the value of money is to borrow some from them. One reason there are so many ju venile delinquents today is that their dads didn't burn their britches behind them. Parents spend the first three years of a child's life trying to get him to talk--and the next sixteen trying to get him to shut up. Twice Told Tales 5SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 31,1928) Adams Bros. (Nick and Otto) of Johnsburg, will assume the proprietorship of the West Side garage on June 1, after which time they will be prepared to do all kinds of automobile repairing. Both of these young men are experienced mechanics and are competent to handle all work in their line. The garage is located just west of the railroad tracks on Waukegan street. Notice is hereby given that the adjourned annual meeting of the stockholders of the Fox .River Valley State bank will be held at the office of the bank, June 18, for the purpose of electing a board of directors for the ensuing year, changing the name of the bank and for the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the meeting. Wednesday, May 30, Memorial day, was very ap propriately observed by McHenry and its citizens and guests. The weather proved to be most favorable, the day being bright with sunshine, which brought many tourists and filled our city with visitors, friends and former residents from far and near. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 9, 1938) Among other transactions the City Council appointed a Band commission at the regular June meeting on Monday night. Controversies over the direction of the band caused the board to take action that no doubt should have been taken in past years. An ordinance was passed which provides for the appointment of a Band com mission consisting of three members of the City Council. The committee is appointed by the mayor. Thus the band will function similar to any other department of the city. City Auditor J.W. North was present to report conditions as summed up for the past fiscal year. Considering the many improvements in the past year, it was most gratifying to find a substantial gain in the financial structure of the city. Ap proximately a $3,500 increase was shown in the past year. Auditor North reported con- PAGE 13 • PLA1ND£AL£K ditions in city affairs as highly gratifying.
