American Legi Auxiliary News 'gion I PITS | The annual spring convention of the 11th District of the American Legion auxiliary was held Sunday, May 21, at Wheaton. The delegates attending from the McHenry unit were Mrs. Richard (Lydia) Fenner; Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper, secretary; Mrs. Roy (Lauretta) Homo, 11th District president; Mrs. George (Ruth) Mrachek, 11th District secretary; Mrs. Ray (Betty Lou) Smith, 11th District treasurer; Mrs. Lloyd (Midge) Scharf, Budget and Finance chairman for the 11th District; Pam Homo, junior member of the McHenry unit and personal page for Mrs. Homo; and Mrs. Barbara Brice. Distinguished guests at the convention were the Honorable Ralph Barger, mayor of Wheaton; Robert Alvin, 11th District commander, Leona Harry, DuPage county president; John Burns, DuPage county commander; Dorothy Randall, Wheaton unit president; ?nd Fred Carstens, Wheaton post commander. Past district directors, presidents and division past presidents were also in­ troduced, including Ruth Mrachek of the McHenry unit. Memorial services were conducted by Chaplain Eileen Johnson, assisted by the four county presidents for fifty- seven deceased members of the district, including Clara Nell of the McHenry unit. The committee chairmen gave their reports: In Com­ munications, first place was awarded to Pearl Cooper of the McHenry unit for her Press book and it was sent to division for further judging June 11 at Morris. In Foreign Relations, Ruth Mrachek was awarded first place for her scrap book on the country of Peru. Her report won and will be sent to Apartment for further judging. Eleanore Held, chaplain, took first place for her 'Book of Prayers', and Mary Chesler, junior chaplain, took second place in her 'Book of Prayers'. Midge Scharf was awarded a third place award for her poppy corsage. Election of officers for the year 1978-79 was held and Mrs. Elwayne (Dorathea) Schubbe of Joliet was elected as the new Uth District president; Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Migalla of Wheaton was elected as vice- president; Mrs. Ralph (Eileen) Johnson of Aurora will serve as historian; Mrs. Gordon (Becky) Gabel of Fox River Grove was elected as chaplain; and Mrs. Phyliss McDoanld of Lockport will be the new treasurer. The sergeant-at- arms will be the new incoming presidents of DuPage, Kane, McHenry and Will counties. Sound movies taken at the McHenry Legion post home in September at the district in­ stallation were shown to the assembled delegates. After an announcement from the Credentials Committee chairman, that sixty-three delegates were in attendance at the convention, the meeting was adjourned. Un­ der present law, benefits to widows and widowers who remarry at 60 or later may be reduced. But the new provision takes place in January 1979. Some other social security benefit changes have also been enacted of late, including: --The length of marriage re­ quired before a divorced woman can be eligible for benefits on the record of her former husband has been reduced from 20 to 10 years. --Social security dependent's benefits to the husband or wife oC a retired, disabled or deceased worker will be reduced by the amount of any pension or annuity- he or she receives based on his o f • her work in noncovered public employment. --The measure of substantial work was changed for people who receive social security disability benefits because of blindness. Current earnings of $200 a month will rise to $500 by 1982, under the plan.
