CLOSE LOCAL BEACHES Water samples collected from swimming beaches by the McHenry County Department of Health May 29 and 30 were obtained from several beaches on the Fox river and from some of the lakes in the county. Public Aid Abortions The Illinois Department of Public Aid will pay for medically necessary abortions for its clients performed on or after May 19, as a result of an order from the Federal District court. So the advice of the experts is to use a good sun screen. "Fair-skinned people run a greater risk of skin cancer if they chronically expose themselves to the sun," ac­ cording to Virginia Weiss, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Illinois Medical center Chicago. "Chronic sun exposure also wrinkles and ages the skin more rapidly," Dr. Weiss added. "Sun screens offer good protection, but some fair- skinned people who use them can still get burned." The sun screens that offer the best protection are those products that contain PABA (Para-aminobenzoic acid). "PABA is very good at ab­ sorbing the burning rays of the sun," Dr. Weiss said. "One can still tan with PABA, but very slowly." Even with the use of sun screens, Dr. Weiss suggests that fair-skinned people avoid prolonged sun exposure from u p.m. to 3 p.m. That is when the sun's rays are most damaging. That old beach standby, baby oil, is no help whatsoever to the fair-skinned sunworshiper, she warns. "Baby oil offers no protec­ tion, and may even cause a heat rash," Dr. Weiss noted. Developing a tan can help people avoid the damaging effects of the sun, according to Dr. Weiss. The dark pigment of the skin, melanin, absorbs the sun's ultraviolet light and prevents burning. "Naturally dark pigmented people, especially blacks, have very little risk of developing skin cancer," Dr. Weiss noted. "Because of melanin, the sun cannot as easily penetrate to the center layers of skin and damage or age the skin as it can for fair-skinned people." If you fail to take precautions and do get a sunburn, cool compresses, lotion# and light creams have the most soothing effect, Dr. Weiss said. "Avoid using heavy creams or Vaseline," Dr. Weiss war­ ned. "They are painful to apply and actually hold the heat in the skin.
