The Bud Pflug family of 1412 Bayview lane recently returned from a trip to Troy, N Y. where they attended graduation ceremonies at Rensselaer Polytechnic institute. Their son. Bud, Jr., graduated with cum laude honors, receiving a bachelor of science degree in Computer and Systems Engineering. He will be working in New York this summer for G.E. and this fall will enter the University of Illinois in Champaign to study for his masters degree. Also attending the graduation ceremonies were an aunt and uncle from Westchester and another aunt from Berwyn. Needless to say, Bud and Marion are very proud of their son AUCTION REPORT The first annual benefit auction for the Johnsburg Rescue squad sponsored by the Concerned Citizens of Pistakee Land was a great success. The gross amount taken in at the auction was $9,018.43. After expenses, a check was presented to the squad in the amount of $7,682.2<X We hope this wm help the squad with their expenses until their annual dance in the fall, sponsored to make operating expenses. The auction was a means of raising extra cash to help because of the rising costs in supplies; receipts from the dance are not enough. We hope all of you who helped make the auction a success will support the Rescue squad when they come around with tickets. Remember these people are all volunteers who give so much of themselves to serve their community. When we need them, they are always there. When they need us, let's show them how much we appreciate their dedication. PARK CHAIRWOMAN Mrs. Lillian Pomonis of 1501 Rosemarie has been chosen as chairwoman for the village of Sunnyside park. The village owns a 5 acre tract of land at Jewel drive and part of this land is designated as park area. Lillian, a committee of one, is working hard to get the park completed. She wants to see the park completed soon and the playground equipment in­ stalled. She has already marked off the 5 acres, but she can't do everything by herself. We have the equipment, but she needs help to put it in. How about some volunteers to help get the park done? If you have some time and would like to give her a hand getting the park equipment installed, call 385-7012. SIX FLAGS VACATION Jonnie and Bill Boike and daughters Carrie and Dqnelle of 4107 Sunset spent Memorial weekend in Six flags, St. Louis. They had a great weekend and Jonnie enjoyed a brief vacation from her hectic duties as sergeant of the Sunnyside Police department. Since the resignation of Earl Kramer as chief, Jonnie is in charge of the department. FAMILY MOVE Former Chief of Police Earl Kramer and his family left Monday, June 5, for Pueblo, Colo. The Kramer's will be missed by their many friends and neighbors and we wish them good luck in their new home. Civic leaders, the Police and Firemen's band, a TV crew, a chtoring crowd and a mayor's reception welcomed them back. But behind the hurrahs were the coaches. Mike Sherman of the Vaux Junior high school team that placed first in their category, and Steve Shutt who coached the Frederick Douglass school team - second place winners in the elemen­ tary school tournament. Given their family backgrounds, these kids would not be ex­ pected to play chess at all - much less excel. But some people don't settle for the ex pected. Like Steve Shutt. Six years before, he had been a new teacher, fresh from selling insurance. He started playing chess with another teacher during lunch hour. Soon they were attracting youthful onlookers. Mr Shutt decided to make the most out of that curiosity and give them a chance to play. They got to be pretty good. He exposed them to tour­ nament play, pitting 10 and 11- year-olds against skilled adults. That meant being beaten, but confronting better players showed them how good they could be. He prepared them to face defeat They hung in. And they began to win "They wouldn't win a game when they started out," says the coach, "but they kept with it." Youngsters who couldn't sit still in class, he found, could concentrate for two or three hours at a sitting and, later, with almost total recall analyze the game.
