SECTION 2 - PA(iE 2 - PLAINDL \i UK - FRIDAY, JUNE 23.1978 Tips To Prevent Car Thefts Any car I see on a dimly lighted street, with a door unlocked or window ajar, belongs to me if I want it," a veteran professional car thief recently claimed "It's stupid to risk getting caught in bright daylight." This boast is borne oi/t by an Automotive \ Parts & Ac cessories association /(4FAA > report which shp^Sgpfe^ns a car stol^^ery^?seconds of the day -- principally because of bad parking habits on the park of motorists. There are many things you can do to make life difficult for car thieves. First of all. lock your car doors The APAA says that four out of five cars stolen were left with th#ribors unlocked -- and 20 percent still had a key in the ignition. At the same time, close all windows tightly to prevent a thief from reaching the lock \but)on with a wire. Over two -thirds of all auto thefts happen at night. Half of these occur in residential areas, so lock your car even at home. And lock your garage as well. When your .car is parked, turn the wheels sharply to the right or left, making it harder to tow. Don't leave valuable items such as CBs, stereos, coats, cameras in view as enticements. And avoid transferring valuables to the trunk at the location where the car is parked-a thief might be watching. Never leave your car running while making a brief stop. Many amateur thieves hang out at convenience stores for just such an opportunity. A running car is an open invitation to theft even in your own driveway. Ringwood News 385-8037 653-9262 728-0343 Use parking lots where wou i take ou can park yourself and then t£tke the keys with you, the APAA advises. If you must leave a key, never leave the whole ring. It's far too easy for dishonest parking lot attendants or their confederates to make copies of your house keys. This gives them a golden opportunity to sack your home, which they can find by checking your license plates. For reasons of home safety, ^don't Jceep your vehicle . registration or maintenance records containing your name and address in the car. And don't identify any of your key rings -- that just tells the thief how to find your car later. One last tip: Don't hide an extra car key under the hood - criminals know all the hiding places.
