That, says physiologist Ed win Glassford, will make them safer drivers. Glassford spends much of his time at the Physical Dy namics Research Institute in San Diego worrying about the way long periods of sit ting behind a wheel fatigue drivers, and make it more dangerous for them to be on the road. Better circulation and thermal regulation-- through pantyhose, leotards, or support stockings--will help, he says. A bucket of cold water kept next to the driver's seat, so that a motor ist can dip in his hands and stimulate blood flow through the body, can also work to counter the problem, says Fleet Owner magazine. For a longer-term solution, Dr. Glassford suggests that the driver sit on a special vi brating cushion. Some on the market send ripples through the thigh muscles, thereby pushing blood upward and keeping it from being trapped in the legs by the 90 degree bend in the body, Glassford says. The cushions work by inflating and deflating on a ten second cycle. One mar keter of the devices, Gulf and Western Manufacturing Co., has sold some to the Pentagon to try to curb fatigue for Navy and Air Force pilots. • * * * We would like to know where the statisticians get their comparisons. College enrollments jumped nearly 47 percent in the 10-year period ending in 1976. In the fall of that year, almost 7.2 million young people 18-24 were at tending college Students' earnings and aid from parents were the most common sources of income for undergraduates. But many of them also depended on student loans, grants or scholarships Scholarships are an im portant part of national 4-H awards programs. In 1978 « total of $244,300 in scholarships funds will go to 273 Current or former 4-H members who meet eligibility requirements set by the Cooperative Extension Service. These scholarships are donated by about fifty businesses* corporations and foundations. They are arranged and announced by National 4-H council. a non-prbfit .organization administering private support for the 4-H progra. v These donors also provide county achievement medals and expense-paid trips to the fifty-seventh National 4-H Congress in Chicago Nov. 26-30 for state and national winners. National 4-H council offers recognition in the 4-H beef, horse and swine programswith $1,000 scholarships to six national winners in each program. More information on these scholarships and awards is available from county ex tension agents. Safety Tips 100 Million Americans In Water This summer more than 100 million Americans will take to the water in four to five million swimming pools, according to the National Swimming Pool institute. In fact, swimming is the nation's favorite outdoor recreation activity. To make sure swimming is a pleasure for everyone in and around the pool, the National Swimming Pool institute offers these safety tips: 1. Never swim or let anyone else swim alone. 2. Never let children play in or around the pool without constant supervision 3. Have basic lifesaving equipment available at all times, as well as a list of emergency telephone numbers. 4. Do not permit roughhousing or horseplay in or around the pool 5. Don't swim when you've just eater, or you're overly tired. 6. Stay out of the water during rain storms 7. All outdoor/pools should be protected by a fence whteh cannot be opened or climbed by children 8. Keep pool decks and diving boards clean and clear of debris. 9. Exercise caution in using diving boards or slides. 10. Have a local NSPI builder or service company make periodic safety and main tenance checks of all pool appliances and equipment. 11. Heme and Nonheme Iron Many of us look to certain vegetables to provide iron in our diet, believing that by eat ing them we are getting enough iron. It's true that certain veg etables do supply iron, but they may hot meet our needs. Sim ply stated, iron comes in two different forms -- heme and nonheme. An important dif ference is in howjhese forms of iron are absorbed by the body. Heme iron, the kind from animal foods, is more readily absorbed by the body, and therefore in a more useful state than nonheme iron from plant sources. In fact, absorp tion of heme iron, found in animal tissues, is five or tenfold higher than nonheme iron. Besides being readily avail able for use, heme iron helps the body use iron from other sources, enhancing the absorj> uon of dietary nonheme iron. Beef is not only one of the best sources of available iron, but it makes the iron in food eaten with it more available. Animal foods are clearly an important source of dietary iron. An aspect of that protection is tracking down those who counterfeit currency, bank notes or Treasury bills. These agents are especially vigilent con cerning currency because of the potential threat to commerce a really successful counterfeiting operation could pose. One of the most common alerts to a counterfeit operation comes from the local bank. Bank personnel are especially trained to identify bogus money. Some with years of experience can tell by the feel of the money whether it is genuine. After the phoney money has been detected in the bank. Treasury agents are notified and the job of tracking down the counterfeiters begins in earnest. Success of the Agents is demonstrated in the fact that counterfeiters have never seriously threatened the value of our currency. It's a record we hope to keep intact.
