Twice, all-star shortstop Chuck Marke turned "would be" hits into double plays. The Stars scored their first run in the second when Phil Oeffling became their first baserunner with a single. With two outs, Gary Connell singled to left and Oeffling scored when Doug Freund dropped the ball. All-Stars Tie «, Score In Third In the third, the Bridge's Gene Hester led off with a single but was forced at second when Marke turned Schaefer's grounder into a double play. The Stars retired the next batter and then scored the tying run in their half of the inning. Mike Peterson singled, moved to second on Bill Huff's deep flyout to center and scored on Jim Yaworski's base hit. In the fourth, the Bridge scored 3 runs to take the lead for good Ron Miller led off with a walk, went to second on Joe Dehn's fly to left and scored what proved to be the winning run on Greg Freund's single. Rick Wakitsch advanced Freund to third with his first hit and Tom Les followed with a double to score Freund, Wakitsch taking third. Steve Rohrer singled^ in Wakitsch with the final njjm of the inning. The Stars threatened only once in the final four innings. Rich Hopper led off the sixth with a single Two flyouts later, Hopper advanced to third on Oeffling's second base hit of the game Irish DeCicco grounded out to second to end the inning. Old Bridge scored their final run in the seventh when Steve Rohrer led off with a double. Gene Hester singled to right after Tim Althoff flied out and an outfield error permitted Rohrer to score All-Stars Grab Early Lead In gaipe two, both teams came o^t hitting. The Stars grabbed a 2-run lead in the top of the first Mike Rogers and Twig Miller both singled and Vinnie Freund reached base on an infield error to load the bases Bill Huff grounded to second and the only play was at first as all runners advanced, Rogers scoring Mike Peterson followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Miller. The Bridge scored twice in their half of the first Doug Freund led off with a double. After Ron Miller flied to left, Joe Dehn and Rick Wakitsch hit successive run scoring doubles Both Freund and Dehn scored to tie the game The Stars came back to retake the lead with another pair of runs in the second Phil Oeffling reached first after one out when third baseman Gary Gilpin fumbled a grounder Dave Sundby lined a shot down the line but Rick Wakitsch snared the ball with a great catch Jim Yaworski doubled to score Oeffling and Mike Rogers followed with his second hit to drive in Yaworski Twig Miller kept the inning alive with a walk, but Vinnie Freund lined to left to end the inning. Six Run Inning Gives Bridge The Lead Old Bridge took the lead for good in their half of the second, scoring six runs while sending eleven men to the plate Jim Grabowski opened the inning with a single but was forced at second when Gary Gilpin grounded to the pitcher Charley Jeske lined out to third as John DeCicco made a nice grab With two outs, Doug Freund singled and Ron Miller slam­ med a 3-run homer to left center scoring Gilpin and Freund Joe Dehn followed with a double and rick Wakitsch singled him in Tom Les kept things rolling with a single and John Pitzen doubled scoring Wakitsch and Les with the final runs of the inning All-Stars Cut Gap The Stars narrowed the gap to one run in the third with 3 runs Bill Huff and Mike Peterson both walked to start the innihg The next two batters flied out, but Phil Oeffling hit a single to score Huff An error on the throw brought in Peterson and Oeffling to make the score 8 7 The Bridge scored |gain in First Place Old Jridge Sweeps All-Stars r to- FLAINUEALER - WEDNESDAY. Greg Freund reached base on an error with one out. Doug Freund singled to right and a bad throw scored Greg Freund and Doug Freund took third. Ron Miller flew to right but it was good for an RBI and a 10-7 lead. The Stars scored their final run in the fourth. John DeCicco singled, but was forced at second with Twig Miller's fielder's choice. Miller advanced to third when Vinnie Freund hit an infield single, coupled with an errant throw to first. Bill Huff followed with a grounder to second which went for an error and a run. Freund And Miller Hitting Stars The final run of the game was scored by Old Bridge when Doug Freund doubled and scored on Ron Miller's double. For Freund it was his second double and fourth hit of the game. For Miller, it was his fifth RBI of the game. Joe Dehn made a great sliding catch off the bat of Bill Huff in the sixth. It turned out to be the final out of the game when the rains came down That wasn't the only thing that came down as Kevin Bauer later ran into the right field fence at the VFW. A 5-run third inning secured the win for the locals, with Bennett Mayberry picking up the win Mayberry threw e six- hitter. Jeff Granger opened the 5- run inning with a single and advanced to second on an in­ field out A single by Pat Teuber put men on first and third, and a single by Mayberry scored Granger and sent Teuber to third Mayberry stole second and Jeff Aim grounded to the first baseman who threw to the plate, too late to get Teuber who scored on the play, with Mayberry advancing to third. Aim stole second, to leave McHenry runners on second and third Tony Karpawich singled to score Mayberry, with Aim stopping at third. Karpawich then stole the third base of the inning for McHenry. A wild pitch followed, allowing Aim to score and Karpawich to take third. An error by the Crystal Lake second baseman then allowed Karpawich to score.
