PAGE I - Ft AINUbALkK • IKIUA1, JtLt ift. m»# Old Bridge Wins McHenry Tournament The Old Bridge Softball club rebounded from a semi-final game loss to the Teenage All- Stars, to defeat the All-Stars twice in the championship games to win last weekend's McHenry 16-Inch Softball tournament > The Teenage Stars Were the suprise of the tournament, as they played consistently good ball, and were the only team to complete the winner s bracket of the tournament without a loss The Bridge, won their first game in the tournament 10 3 over the Back Door Pub Tom Les paced the Bridge attack with 2 hits and 3 runs scored, while Joe Dehn, Rick Wakitsch and Ron Miller added 2 hits each with Dehn and Wakitsch scoring 2 runs each The All-stars won their first game in the tournament, defeating the Limerick 6-3 Jeff Meyers and Marty Zeller paced the stars with 3 for 3 games Meyers added 2 runs scored Other opening round games included Sunnyside Inn's well- played 20-1 win over Morenz Maintenance; Butch s Tap's 8-5 win over Johnsburg Wooden Nickel; the Nomads. 15-3 over Town Pump: Fox Hole. 12-0 over Robeard's Restaurant; the Wizards. 8-7 over Scan- danavian Design; and in a very suprising game. Henning Electric defeated number one seeded Hiller Construction, 8-4. Second round action, found the Teenage All-stars matched against Henning Electric. A seventh inning homer by Tony Bentz of the Stars, gave them a 3-2 win over Henning. in a very low scoring contest The Maulers, seeded number two in the tourney and winners over Sunnyside Inn. 17-2, continued to hit the ball well and easily defeated the Wizards in the second round. 16-2. The Old Bridge scored every inning but one, in defeating the Crispy Critters. 12-5 Wakitsch, with a homerun and a double drove in 3 runs to pace the Bridge and John Pitzen scored 3 times and had 2 RBI's to help lead the Bridge v The Nomads had a struggle, but defeated Fox Hole, 14-10, to complete second round play in the winner's bracket Saturday night. Loser's bracket games in the double elimination tournament found Sunnyside Inn winning over Scandanavian Design before bowing to Fox Hole Sunnyside appears ready to capture their first league win in McHenry Number one seeded Hiller Construction defeated Wooden Nickel and Morenz Main tenance easily, but were knocked out of the tournament early Sunday morning by the Crispy Critters Fox Hole followed"^their win over Sunnyside by beating the Critters and Town PUmp won three straight over Robeard's, Wizards, and Back Door Pub Sunday, the Teenage Stars continued their winning ways, syprising the Maulers, 12-4 A win over the Maulers proved to everyone in attendance that the Stars were ready to play In the other quarterfinal winner's bracket game, the Old Bridge easily defeated the tournament-tested Nomads, 15 4. Joe Dehn with 4 hits and Tom Les with 3 hits paced the Bridge Doug Freund added 3 hits and Pitzen had 2 hits and a pair of runs scored. Back in the loser's bracket, the Maulers came back from their suprising loss to the All- Stars to defeat Fox Hole 11-7 and the Nomads beat Town Pump for the second time in the tournament, 9-5 The Fox Hole and Town Pump, both teams in the McHenry 16-Inch league, tied for fifth place in the tour nament The Nomads handed the Maulers their second loss of the tournament and a fourth place finish by winning 10-4. In the semi-final game, between the only unbeaten teams left in the tournament, the Teenage All-Stars escaped with a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Old Bridge Marty Zeller s 3 RBI 's paced the Stars, as Bill Meyers scored 2 runs, including what proved to be the winning run. The Old Bridge was plagued by inconsitent hitting and left nine baserunners stranded in the game. Wakitsch blasted his second homerun of the tour nament for the losers. The defeat sent the Bridge into the loser's bracket to meet the Nomads for the second time in the tournament. The Bridge lead throughout the game and held on to win 8-6. The Nomads finished the tournament in third place The finals matched the Bridge and the All-Stars.y with the Stars needing just one win to capture first, while the Bridge would have to defeat the high-flying Stars twice in a row. The Stars jumped out to a 3- run lead in the topof the first. Bill Meyers, who had a fine tournament, hitting and fielding, singled, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Zeller s single. A triple by Don Bentz scored Zeller and a single by Tony Bentz scored Don Bentz. The Bridge scored twice in the first. Dehn singled, Wakitsch was safe on an error, and Greg Freund notched the first of his two triples in the game to drive in both runs. ** The game remained 3-2, until the Stars scored once in the third after Bill Meyers reached on an error. A triple by Zeller scored Meyers, making the score 4-2. Old Bridge scored once in the fourth, as Greg Freund tripled and scored on Ron Miller's fly out. From then on it was all Old Bridge. In the fifth, they scored 6 runs, thanks in part to three Star errors and a wild streak by their pitcher Bill Meyers. A bases loaded triple by Les keyed the inning. In the sixth, the Bridge put the game on ice by scoring 11 more runs. Wakitsch's homerun, his third of the tournament was the big blow of the inning, in which the Bridge stroked 9 base hits The Stars, who were shut out the final four innings found themselves with their first loss. 20-4 Following a short break, the two teams battled again, and a 12-run first inning put the game and the tournament away for the Old Bridge. Six men reached base in the first inning before an out was made and Wakitsch connected for his fourth homerun and third against Sunnyside Wakitsch and Dehn both had 2 h'ts in the big first inning The Stars scored 2 runs in the first and 3 in the second and the score read Old Bridge 13, Teenage All-Stars 6, after 3 innings In the fourth,, the Bridge scored 5 more runs, thanks to 3 Star errors and hits by Doug Freund, Les and Dehn. The Stars scored once more and the Bridge added 2 runs in the final inning to score 20 for the second game in a row and win, 20-6. The Teenage All-Stars proved that incentive and momentum can carry a team a long way. The Stars played excellent ball to gain the finals and should be commended for their c performance. The "Cinderalla team" had the backing of Jhe crowd thoroughout the tournament The Bridge is rapidly becoming one of the finer Softball teams in the area Their season record now stands at 44 wins and 7 losses Sunnyside Inn and Town Pump, the two worst teams in current McHenry league standings, played well in the tournament, with Town Pump tying for fifth place and Sun nyside winning two of four games Fox Hole once again played consistent ball, which has been their trademark for the entire season and finished fifth. The big suprise was Hiller Construction Seeded number one, the defending champion and a proven tournament team was out of contention early in the tournament m EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Just returned from my last meeting as a member of the McHenry Library Board It was 32 years ago that the library was taken over by the Cfty of McHenry after the Mothers' Club struggled through lean years to provide the community with good reading and as many reference books as could be purchased with limited funds Lillian Anglese and I were named as members of that first board and we stayed right in there until now when both decided to pass the bain to younger appointees In earlier days. The professional skydivers from Wisconsin highlighted the days activities which featured golf and a dinner for many prominent businessmen and athletes. The Red Cloud Association was started in 1965 by now Los Angeles Ram head coach George Allen to benefit the Indian children at the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. Proceeds of the benefit golf day and the yearly Red Cloud banquet held in January in Chicago benefit the athletic programs at the reservation Present at the outing and dinner were WGN celebrity Roy Leonard, former Bear stars Jim Grabowksi and Ronnie Bull, Bear Safety Doug Plank, and many other prominent athletic figures. Over 150 people participated in the golf outing, directed by club professional John Bolton. The Red Cloud benefits many other local charities and fund raising events thoroughout the country.
