The elephants were part of the traveling Hollywood Elephants of Ben and Linda DeWayne of Hollywood, Cal. There were stopped in McHenry awaiting their next circus engagement In Mendota. The Hollywood Elephants have been on tour throughout the summer with the Shrine Circus and after Mendota, will entertain visitors to the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee. The four elephants, one African and three Asian, range in age from 33 years, weighing 5Mt-tons, to 4 years old, weighing 2 tons. All of the elephants have starred in numerous television shows and motion pictures. Dumbo, the oldest of the touring pachyderms, has appeared in more movies than any other living elephant, including many appearances in the Tarzan movie series. Ben DeWayne, pictured above, spray paints equipment to be used during the circus acts of his Hollywood elephants. DeWayne used the week layover in McHenry to rest his elephants and work on the circus equipment. Below, Dumbo and Peggy pose for a picture with DeWayne. Dumbo, at left, is the senior member of the Hollywood elephant cast. She is 33-years-old and weighs SMi-ton. According to DeWayne, Dumbo has starred in more motion; pictures than any other living elephant, including many appearances in the long running Tarzan movie series. Peggy, at right, is 14-years-old and presently weighs 4-tons. All four of the elephants have been on television as well as in the movies and will appear in the fall on the Circus of the Hollywood Stars. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity or improper ventilation over­ burdens the dog's heat- dissipating mechanism and places an extra burden on circulatory and respiratory systems These conditions can cause heat stress Pets confined in automobiles, even if the win­ dows are slightly open, and pets kept outside without proper housing and shade are in greatest danger of heatstroke and heat exhaustion Heatstroke, the most common and most often fatal syndrome in dogs, is caused by exposure to high temperatures and humidity and poor ventilation Heatstroke develops rapidly Physical symptoms include panting, a staring or anxious expression, failure to respond to commands, warm dry skin, extremely high fever (110 degrees F ), rapid heartbeat and collapse Heat exhaustion or heat prostration is another form of heatstroke which may occur in animals following prolonged exposure to intense heat and heavy exertion Salt deficiency is also a cause Heat exhaustion develops less rapidly than heatstroke It is characterized by fatigue, muscular weakness and circulatory collapse Puppies, older or overweight dogs, and dogs with a history of cardiovascular diseases are most susceptible to heat stress Short-nosed dogs like the bulldog, pug, pekingese and boxes are likely to suffer more in hot weather. These dogs have greater difficulty in breathing, which reduces the amount of body heat loss In heatstroke cases, high fever must be reduced rapidly to save the dog's life and prevent permanent brain damage Body temperatures of 106 degrees F., and above can be tolerated for only a few minutes before irreversible damage occurs to the central nervous system The most effective treatment is to immerse the dog in ice water If this is not possible, spray the dog with cold water from a garden hose.
