KANGAS There's An Answer (by Norman Vincent Peale and Ruth Stafford Peale} Feels Bewitched Q. I must be bewitched. Although I don't really believe in witches I must be. The world has fallen on me. My wife ran away with another man. I got fired from a job I held for 19 years. Then my son ran away and got married and I haven't seen him since. Now I can't hold a job because of depression and a useless feeling. I've loat my home and most of my money on cars and car wrecks. Lost my driver's license for six months for driving under the influence. Tomorrow will probably bring some bad news because if I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all. A. You are not bewitched. Your trouble can very well be that you are constantly expecting some bad thing to happen and therefore you actually stimulate such unhappy results. TTiere is a deep tendency in human nature to become precisely like that which we imagine ourselves to be. The projected image can be either destructive or creative. It is possible that you have allowed a series of bad breaks to condition your mind to expectation of more of the same. Expectation produces in kind. You'd better try to become a positive thinker. And you can if you want to badly enough and if you really work at it. In the hope that it will help you in your efforts, we are placing you on our mailing list to receive "Creative Help for Daily Living," a monthly mailing of inspirational literature. Anyone who wishes a free copy of this publication may write to us at Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564. Believe Him or Forget Him? Q. My friend is a first lieutenant in the army. He calls and sends me cards but never writes a letter. He claims he has a lot of responsibility. Should I believe him or should I forget I ever knew him? A. We believe you should take him as he is. He just doesn't like to write letters. If you want a boy friend on the basis of whether he writes letters, you had better get that type. Praying for Death Q. At the age of six year I was sexually abused by a teenage neighbor. For 20 years I have been living with depression. I feel inadequate, cheap, dirty and worthless. This depression and traumatic incident is destroying not only me, but also my marriage. I've gone back into praying for death and wanting some peace from my ghosts. Nobody will listen to me.So where am I? I'm loat, confused, tired and afraid; but most of all-alone. A. You seem to do a pretty good job of psychologically analyzing yourself, but not such a good job in healing yourself. Of course you are not "inadequate, cheap, dirty and worthless." You are simply thinking the wrong kind of thoughts, and those thoughts, being unhealthy, increase your personality sickness. It is stupid to pray for death; but very smart to pray for life. You can live a healthy, happy life at age twenty-six if you start thinking that you can. Forget the past and walk away from it. If there is something you would like to ask Dr. and Mrs. Peale to discuss in this column, write to them in care of Box 500, Pawling, NY 12SA4. If you would like to talk directly with a prayer partner, call Prayer Line 212-481-1050. Reduced long-distance rates are in effect nights and weekends. Try to make the pieces easy to eat in one bite. Cut the meats and cheese into slices, and then into slivers about 11/2 inches long and 1/4 inch wide. These are called Julienne strips. The dressing for this salad goes well on most salads and can be made in larger quantity than is called for in this recipe. Use a vegetable oil such as peanut oil and it will keep for weeks outside of the refrigerator. Refrigeration tends to make it cloudy which doesn't impair the flavor, but makes it difficult to pour. r Chefs Salad Degree of difficulty: Moderate Time: l/t hour Ingredients: 2 quarts of salad greens (mixed varieties or all the same) 2 hard boiled eggs, " chopped pound Swiss cheese, cut into strips pound boiled ham, cut into thin strips pound chicken breast, cooked and cut into V4 Vi Vi Servings: Four to $ix Cost: Inexpensive thick slices white bread tablespoons butter large tomato, peeled and cut into eighths ounccs tarragon vinegar teaspoon salt teaspoon powdered dry mustard ounces vegetable oil clove garlic, minced teaspoon freshly ground black pepper teaspoon dried tarragon thin strips • Wash and dry the greens, then tear them into small pieces.
